Default 1985 EZ Go Marathon

Hi,
Just purchased a 85 ez go marathon that has been sitting outside in Minnesota for the past year or so. Got it home and charged the battery, drained and refilled with gas. When I press the gas pedal it turns over like it wants to go, but wont move. The belt on the engine turns but not the wider belt on the clutch. Does the engine have to rev to a certain rpm before this belt turns and the cart moves?
Not sure if this could be happening because of the carb might be plugged? Its getting fuel to the carb as I took the hose off and pressed the pedal and gas comes out.
Also, there is a metal flap type thing (sorry not very descriptive) in front of the clutch assembly next to the gas tank and it has a cable running from it and over towards the front of the engine, but its broke off so I don't know where it goes, anybody have any ideas as to what it is? I will post pictures of that later, the main thing is getting this cart moving.

Thanks in advance.

The "flap like thing" is the governor. The cable runs from the governor to the carb, as the clutch opens up the cable starts closing the carb so that the engine won't over rev. you can run without it hooked up, just don't over rev it. If you want to hook it up, you will need to get a clutch cover and button. As far as it not starting, I would check to see if you are getting fire at the spark plug. Also check the compression. If you have fuel, spark, and compression it should start.

And yes, the clutch will not slide in and engage the drive belt until a certain RPM level is hit.

Also, if the cart still has the oil injection hooked up, unhook it ASAP and go to premix at 128:1.

Compression should be over 100, and there should be a healthy spark. If you got both, we can start stepping through some ideas.

BTW welcome to BGW!

welcome to BGW. from the the looks of it, you should definetly get rid of that oil pump. just pull all the oil lines and plug up the resulting hole in the carb. you can either use a small metric bolt (cleanest) or a short piece of hose that is plugged. you can also pull the pump and reservoir if you want to clean up the engine bay some.

i have a 1985 ezgo marathon as well and i run 50:1 should i switch to 128:1? mine sat for quite a while it runs but its slow due to my belt being to big im ordering a new one and exhaust leaking but im fixing that as well but i think the needle in the carb is stuck because it pisses gas or could tht be a cause of running 50:1? thanks

They can be faulty. And if you disconnect it and just premix the gas you always know its getting oil. Only time you would know it isn't getting oil with the pump is if the motor seized.
