Default Starting Question

Would a battery that is going bad cause issues starting?

My brother took the cart out a couple of day ago. He got to his buddies house and hung out for a few hours. When he was ready to leave he tried to start the cart and it would not fire. He told me it smelled as if it was flooded then the batery went dead from trying to get it going.

The following day he went to his buddies house with the battery charger and charged the battery. After that it fired right up.

The cart has a new Carb, new Air filter, new fuel lines, new plugs, and the pump has pleanty of fuel pressure.

Any thoughts?

Likely a battery issue based on your narrative.

These are basically magneto ignitions, which require the engine to turn over at a good rate. If your battery is weak, it may not turn the engine at a fast enough speed to produce ignition. A good battery is well worth your investment! Before trashing your old one, make sure your system charges properly ( 13.8 - 15V ) while running at about half throttle. Your present battery may just need a charge if the generator - voltage regulator wasn't working.

So it looks like the issue is the battery everything else checked out good.

What is the best Battery for a gas cart with a bunch of accesories? I have seen some people say to get an Optima with 70 or 75 cranking amps. Any suggestions on model number or options?

Thanks

Here is my suggestion. Measure the available space in the battery box (including height), make a note of the terminal type and the troll off to Wally World and get the highest cold cranking amp battery you can find that will fit. This is what I did and I think I ended up with a Geo Tracker battery for ~$30. Being a car battery it cranks the little 2PG very fast and the engine starts right up.

BTW, far be it from me to correct a fellow carter but your ignition is not a magneto system it is a battery system. Magnetos are usually found in battery free applications such as chain saws and weed wackers.

So I changed the battery because we continued to have problems. That has not resolved the issue. The cart seems to have low spark. Any suggestions what should I check for?
