Default Need help with Carburetor adjustment

Hey all,

I keep comin back for a reason! How about this, cart rarely but occasionally backfires, spits gas out of the front of the carb and the plugs were black as night. Oh and it will only start/run with the air filter off and the box open. Sounds like I am running a little rich wouldn't you say? I pulled the carb, clean as a whistle, but I cleaned and blew out anyways. Installed new plugs and no help there. The main jet and pilot jet were both screwed all the way clockwise, which I thought would be the most restrictive? Anyways, am I missing something? Would turning the jets counterclockwise actually kill some of the flow? A valve adjustement is definitely next, but my buddy keeps insisting the carb is running too rich and I can't find anything in the EXGo manual?

All thoughts appreciated.

btw, engine is a 2004 mci..., I can post pics of the carb if needed

Yep sounds like it runs rich. maybe some d/a drilled out the main jet or you have a other than factory carb. The only adjust on the carb is a small almost useless adjustment on the idle jet pilot screw of about 1/4 of a turn. since the engine doesn't really idle I find this adjustment most useless but in your case turn it all they way to the left, it may help some.
while a valve adjustment is a good idea, it's not going to lean out the fuel mix getting to the engine

Jon,

You're right about the change in carb, it's definitely been something I've been wondering about. I need to do some more research and find out more about my engine. When I got the cart, I was told it was a 97 Jacobsen Hauler 1110. I can beleive at least that it's a hauler to some extent as that is what's written on the dump bed, but after that, IDK WTF. I do know that my engine is a circa 2003/2004 mci engine. When I got the cart, it had a rigged up air intake and a fake homemade exhaust (see my spreads hauler post). My real problems started when I put the proper exhaust on the back end. After I did that, the cart won't start or run unless the engine is a running temperature. When I go to start it, bam, it floods out right away. I let it dry out and try again shortly. I keep this process up for a while until the engine gets hotter and after enough trying (and gas wasting), it finally catches. Even then, I have to run it for a while before I can close the air box back up. So I figure I'll destroy the rings if not the whole engine soon enough if this keeps up! (Then I'll have reason to buy a big block!).

In either case, I digress. I thought I may have had a higher altitude jet, but a little research into carb operation and this is quite the opposite. I did notice from some of the parts manuals that you posted that some carts (like the workhorse) use the #92 main jet, while others like the Txt use a #90. I'm going to pull the carb again tomorrow and see if the # is stamped on the bottom (I know something is), but I don't know if there is a big difference between the 2 or which one is the right one for my mci, hence me needing to research the engine. I talked to someone (maybe Tom?) at Cpp today cause I was interested in ordering their bigger carb jet, but I was concerned if I'm runnin rich, if that would be a good idea. He thinks if I had the homemade exhaust that it is likely some d/a would have drilled the jet. Also he thinks if the valves are too far out of adjustment that it may actually be part of the problem too.

So for tomorrow, to summarize, I have to:

-Pull carb and check to see if size is discernable and if it is evident if someone drilled.
-Find out what my engine should have (I have a feeling that if the engine was swapped, they may or may not have swapped the carb, and besides, IDK if that matters)
-Adjust the valve clearance (cold first) and see what my results are.

Thanks for your help jon, I was going to pm, but I figure this info is better out on the boards for all to see.

I'll keep you posted.
Mike

The carbs on the TXT(295) and the Workhorse(350) are the same except for the jetting. Cause of the engine swap I don't know what your engine is so I can't say what would be the correct jetting to use.

All I can say, is VALVE ADJUSTMENT, VALVE ADJUSTMENT, VALVE A-F@CKING-JUSTMENT!!! I can't believe that I didn't do this first thing when I got my cart. I was a little apprehensive because I never actually did a valve adjustment, but I followed the dummy proof instructions in the EZ-Go manual posted by Ruredy and fumbled around with the feeler gauge until I was happy. In any case, it was like a brand new cart engine! I can't believe what a difference it made! I was flooding the engine out like a madman previously and now it starts first time, every time!

I have a theory, the two inner valves (which I assume are the exhaust valves, somebody correct me if I'm wrong) were tight up against the cam lobes with almost no clearance, whereas the outside valves (intake I presume), where just slightly more than the recommended clearance of .004 (they were about .006). In either case, I adjusted all to .004 and what a freakin differance!! This should be the first think someone does if they by a used cart from a private party in addition to changing the oil and rear diff oil and changing the plugs and air filter if necessary.

Interestingly enough, the lock nuts on the MCI engine are 9mm not 10mm. It kind of made life tricky as my smallest wrench was a 10mm, but I got by with needle nose plyers and a 9mm socket.

Pics to come soon!

Mike,

See my other post, my engine actually has 9mm lock nuts and square heads, instead of the flathead screws. Weird huh, I can post some pics next time I crack the valve cover.

Spreads...........

Thanks, dock. Very impressive forum! Not only did I find the information that I needed in this thread, but my same search revealed the step-by-step posted by ruredy (done by ezgomike on another site) that shows me how to fix it. I don't know how I missed it on the other site, but, wow, am I excited now!
I wanted to send them a personal message to say thanks, but I don't know how. Maybe they'll happen by this post and see my gratitude.
Thanks again for the warm welcome. Milt
