Default Ratio on ezgo rear end?

I have a coil spring type rear end/trans from a 4 stroke ezgo, probably mid to late 80's. I tried to turn the shafts and count revolutions, but I get 14:1 both forward and reverse. Could that be? Seems like alot. I was thinking 12:1 or 11:1. Any idea what the stock ratios are?

Also, I'm thinking of using this with a 440 exciter engine. Will this rear end hold up if I detune the engine to say 35-40 hp? Stock these engines are like 55hp so I'm sure it won't handle that?

Not sure on the ratio but 14 would not surprise me considering how slow those carts were. Is it a differential or transaxle? Either way it will handle the full 55hp. The hubs may be a different story, depending upon your clutch setup.

Most TXT's are 13.32:1; service manual lists a HP version that calc's out to 10.67:1. Given how I don't feel they make a lot of changes to something like the rear axle, wouldn't surprise me if the Medalist and back a ways were also something pretty low too.

So should I be looking for a newer transaxle in order to get 40 mph speed or will a ratio like that do? Not looking to win any 1/4 mile drag races, but maybe a race or two to the mailbox? LOL
Oh and the drive clutch will be stock Yami sled type, driven will be stock ezgo 4 cycle. I'm hoping I can tune the drive clutch if needed.

CPP (and others) sells two higher gear sets for the ME29 axle in gas TXTs. You should verify for sure what model rear end you have to be sure they will work.

Beware though, that these gear sets billed as "8:1" and "6:1" are NOT really those ratios - they are really 9.97:1 and 8.75:1, respectively.

So does it have forward & reverse? If so, it's newer than the 80s.

The 4 stroke rear diffs have reverse & the driven clutch is perpendicular to the axles.

Might do you some good to post a pic of it for someone to ID it for you before you get started on the build.

Yes it does have reverse, and it looks just like one in my old cart which was a '98.

So when did they start using 4 strokes? I guess I assumed it was in te late 80's.
