This thread made this conversion on my 1989 restoration project a breeze! Thanks to all that have contributed.

It should work for anything with a VR pickup.

Just wanted to update as to my situation. My HEI mod is firing like a champ! Make sure to look at the placement of the terminals on the actual coil. I had both terminals on the upper two prongs because I looked at the small pic without blowing it up to see its actually the lower prong on one side. My real issue is Crank seals but my coil was corroded bad and I am glad it is done now :) thanks for the help guys! Now to put these seals in...

Ron, I have installed the module per your instructions. I have intermittent spark. I used a standard ignition coil that I know works. I have metered all voltages. At coil when trying to start I get 12 volts across the plus and monus. When I check the voltages at the module I see 12 volts to ground. When I check the AC volts out of the pulser pickup I see maybe 5 or 6 but it fluctuates. Any ideas, is there an aftermarket pulsar available?

HEI Conversion on 3PG Cart

- Purchase an ignition coil and matchiing ignitor from a 1977 Chevy
Nova 4.1L I6
I got mine from Advance Auto for about $60.
See pics #1 and #2 below.

- Remove the stock ignitor from the cart and mount the new ignitor in it's
place. Be sure to apply conduction grease supplied with ignotor on the
backside to improve cooling. The ignitor can get HOT!
See pic #3 below.

- Remove the stock coil from the cart.

- Mount new coil. I chose to mount it close enough to the engine so I could
still use my stock spark plug wire. You can mount the coil sideways like I
did since it is not oil filled. I just drilled two holes on the cross member and
used long bolts to secure it.
See pic #4 below.

- Go to NAPA and get a spark plug connector and boot for the blunt end of
your stock plug wire and install them so your plug wire will plug onto your
new coil.

- Refer to attached wiring diagram that I found on this site. Note, the wires
from the pulsar to the ignitor needed to be reversed on my cart, or it would
not run!!!! See pic #5 below.

- Connect the BLUE wire from the pulsar
to the "G" terminal on the ignitor.
- Connect the RED wire from the pulsar
to the "W" terminal on the ignitor
- Connect the B terminal on the ignitor
to the "YELLOW/RED" wire on the solenoid.
- Connect the C terminal on the ignitor
to the "- TERMINAL" on the coil.
- Connect the + TERMINAL on the coil
to the "GREEN" wire on the solenoid.

Your cart should now run like a champ!!!

New member here, so it I am drumming up something that I failed to find in my searches, please forgive me.

My questions regarding this 'upgrade' are:

Will this work on the 2PG carts.
And what if the Pulsar is bad?
How do I check to see if its is bad?
And if bad, what is the recommendation for a replacement?

Yes, it works great on a 2pg. Follow the diagram in the first post of this thread. Sometimes you have to switch the red, and blue pulsar wires to see which way it runs best.

Unless the pulsar was smashed with a hammer, it most likely is not bad.

Put a meter on the red, and blue pulsar wires. Resistance should read between 120, and 180 ohms. {That comes from the 85 manual. I have also read between 75, and 150 ohms from other sources.}

My suggestion would be to start a new thread, tell us what year cart you have, and what issues it is having. Then we can all have fun trying to troubleshoot it.

i did this conversion and got my 87 244cc going

I finally got it to run after doing the HEI conversion , it had no spark (or sporadic spark). I put it all back together, added fuel and oil.
cart ran ok, but moved really slow, so I reversed pulsar wires, ran better with more power.

Only thing now is when the cart goes it will go a few feet with power but then engine will drop down to an idle with pedal pushed to floor and stops moving.
I let off gas and hit it again and it will go another 5 to 10 feet and do it again.
drop to an idle . it will do this in forward and reverse. It smokes pretty good also, but I did add quite a bit of oil to gas so it will be lubed when it first started.

I added more gas to dilute the fuel/oil mixture.

any ideas ??
