Default E-Z-GO ST 4X4 Fuel problem

Hi All! New to your great fourm..
I bought a new 2007 Ezgo ST 4x4 two years ago from an Ezgo dealer..It has allways been hard to start and warm up..I only have 70 hours on it..Last summer it would not start and took it back to the dealer and after $350.00 it ran for a week then died again..He told me it was dirt in caurb..I found a lot of water in the fuel tank..This is from the angle of the filler cap and the way water will come in from the vent..I made a flap to keep this from happing again..
I drained all the fuel from the tank and I also found the pick up tube with it's screen mesh was flatten down..This tells me that the tube is too long..I shorten it by an 1"..I put a bulb pump primer in-line to help get fuel to the carb..Still wont start..I took the carb off and it did have some dirt in it..I need a gasket kit for it..There is an "O" gasket on the bottom 1/2 that I can see that was pinched off and it was not installed correctly..Where can I get replacment carb parts for this Honda engine? I allways thought the fuel pump is not work right..The dealer is no help, no he's closed for the winter..
I think Ezgo and Honda did a poor engineering job designing this machine..When it was running, the idle could not be controled..Either too fast and you can't shift it into gear or too slow and it stalls...
I like the ruggedness of it, don't like the stiff ride though..
Anyone have any help on this fuel problem? Thanks!

Don't feel too distraught about your Honda; I believe this is an issue with a lot of these ST4x4’s. In my opinion, these Honda GX's are great engines but maybe not really the best choice for this type of cart.

Mine has over 1,000 hours and suffers some of the same issues;
* Only starts if you choke it (when cold)
* Idle RPM is inconsistent - RPM's seem to increase when it’s warm / hot.

I have a new carburetor (model # posted and my "EZGO" thread by my signature) and new fuel pump.

In comparison, my Cushman has a 14HP Briggs V-twin; starts without being choked, warms up enough to idle in about 30sec and idles all day long at 800-900 RPM.

One of the differences between these two setups is that the Briggs has an idle / limit governor on the engine where as the Honda is on the transmission. I have to imagine that governor on the engine gives a steadier RPM.

Though I have not had a lot of time to dig back into mine lately, here are a couple things that may help;

* Use a gasoline stabilizer if you’re not already. It does make a difference.
* Check you plugs - there have been discussion that "hotter" or "colder" may help. At least clean and check the gaps.
* Check valve adjustment - though with as few hours you have, not certain it will be needed.
* Fuel pumps are not that expensive – I paid about $30 for mine. Check “on line” stores or eBay for a new one. Or test yours by cranking the engine to see if it’s pumping gas. It does not push allot.

It you have spark and it’s not starting, make certain you have the “fuel cutoff” wire attached to the carb. (I believe there’s one on there); also make certain your choke linkage is working properly.

Also, for mine I upped the spring in the primary drive clutch – this give you a little more idle room without it engaging.

Let us know how it works out…

Maybe try a fuel water separator. There's plenty of room for one. I thought about it, but never pulled the trigger. Also find a good mechanic and take it to him. I got tired of messing with mine. Trying to get it to idle properly finally got the best of me and I took it to a shop. It's there now. The guy knew what the ST 4x4 was without having to ask, which is promising...I hope. He's going to adjust the valves, service the carburetor and maybe replace the clutch. I'll let you know how it turns out. He had pictures of several others that he'd worked on before and he said he'd get it running right. We'll see.

Ours was always hard to start. Added NAPA 3011 fuel filter and replaced carburetor from B&S dealer. Recently, throttle was sticking as water had got in and would freeze. Idle is harder to maintain with the larger 55 amp alternator.

Do you guys start it like it says to which is to choke it and hold the gas pedal down? Mine starts right up like this. If I don't do it this way then it does not start easily.
