Default New Fuel Pump Doesn't Want to Suck Gas from the Tank

I have a 1996 EZ-GO TXT gas cart with the 295cc Fuji engine. Recently I installed a new fuel pump. The cart starts and runs okay if it is driven fairly often, but after it has been sitting a few days, apparently the gas in the carburetor float chamber goes away. After that, the pump does not have enough force to suck gas out of the tank. In order to start the engine, we have to remove the tube that leads from the pump to the carburetor and use a syringe to fill it with gas. Once the tube and the float chamber are full, the engine will start and then the fuel pump will continue to suck gas out of the tank to keep things going.

When I remove the vacuum line from the engine to the fuel pump and crank the engine, I get a very soft puff-puff-puff of air against my finger. Is this the way it should be?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Dave, what you explained appears the engine doesn't have enough vacuum to allow the pump to pull gas from the tank. You need to run a compression test to determine if the engine is in need of repairs.

The engine is as peppy and powerful as it has ever been, so compression does not seem to be the problem.

Air seems to be blowing out of the tube, rather than sucking in.

It is pulsing in and out as the pistons rise and fall.
I would check all fuel line connections cut the hoses back
a bit and install good clamps to prevent any air leaks.

Did you prime the new pump? If not then it may have sufficient air in there to allow it to pump when the engine revs are high but not when cranking. Remove the line to the carburetor, wrap a rag around the filler hole and blow. Once a solid stream of gas comes out of the line the pump is primed.

Thanks, Dave. The problem is that after sitting a few days, it loses its prime and must be primed again before it will work. I did not have this problem with my old fuel pump.

So the gas is going somewhere. One possibility is that your new pump has a pinhole leak. If that is so then the fuel could be leaking down the pressure pipe into the crankcase. So the next question is if you smell the dipstick, do you smell gas?

(I assume that if the gas was just leaking to the atmosphere, you would smell gas around the cart and would have mentioned that)

Hi Dave, Those pumps are kinda universal and the input/output can be reversed.
Just for giggles and grins switch the gas lines to see if you get the right
flow. If you do, Sounds like center section of the 3 piece pump is backwards.

Remove the four phillips-head screws remove the outer cover, flip only the middle
section so (using the pic below as an example) lower tube that is on the left will then be on the right - reassemble

Be careful not tear or pinch either of the diaphragms that sandwich the middle section

It sucks when you tear the diaphragms or the rubber?!!
