Hard to Start
I have an older gas ezgo with the robins 290C 4 stroke engine. It takes forever to get it cranked, but once it is going, it runs like a top. As I try to start, gas will spit from the front of the carburetor and if I give any gas past the lock position of the brake, it floods. Any help in this is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Hard to Start
You might also check the valves for gap. But I do agree with #88 up there. Also have you cleaned carb really well?

Re: Hard to Start
Thanks, I have cleaned the carbs, but have not thought about the linkage. Pretty good with engines, just new to this type. Tried starting it since this post and through a backfire out the front of the carb, had a small fire. I will back off the linkage and check there. Pretty sure due to the age the valves will need adjusted. Also going to look into the backflow that can be created by a clogged muffler. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! Will keep posted.

Re: Hard to Start
the air coming out the front does sound like valves. your intake valve is open on the compression stroke. i had the same thing with the clogged muffler. but the motor was using the muffler like an air tank and it would get full of air and blow back out the carb

Re: Hard to Start
Pulled the muffler and it seemed good. Pretty sure I am down to the valves. It makes the most sense at this point. Plan to set and gap them this week if a friend who is better at this than I can help. Thanks for the input.

Re: Hard to Start
Their not bad takes just a few minutes. The way I learned was from the guys here. Some one but not sure who told me to get to top dead center and then just loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw till it just kisses the valve. then back it of just under a quarter turn. tight the nut back and it should be dang close.
