Hard starting problems for gas 2 cycle...
Hello guys,
I have been having the worst time getting my 81 gas 2 cycle started. I usually will have to choke it and it sputters a bit trying to start and then will finally start after about a minute I push the choke back in. When I park it , it will not crank again until it cools down. If I do try to crank it sometimes it will just sound like the starter belt is straining to turn over. I feel like it may be the starter or maybe something else electrical. I just put a new plug in as well, the last one was smelling of gas. It doesn't seem to be a seal problem. I did a top end rebuild last year and trying to wait til summer and do a full rebuild. Also there is no loss of power when going or driving up hills. thanks for any help guys. |

fingerpicker again check the grounds and maybe time for a new battery? Have it checked under a load. It will act like this if the battery isn't fully charged.Autozone Oreillys NAPA or your local supplier.Fully charge the battery first and while charging check all your grounds and clean!!!!

Thanks racing, Ill keep checking some of the wiring. I just got a brand new battery a few months ago. I did notice the thick black ground wire by the air filter canister that is screwed into the big arm looks a bit frayed.

Have you had this trouble since you did the top end? if so check the valve gap sounds like it may be to tight. and as it warms up it gets tighter.

Re: Hard starting problems for gas 2 cycle...
hello, I still didn't get it nailed down yet Racin, I have had to work on it here and there. It's been nuts around the house. I tried to checking all of the wires and did not find a problem. the thing I keep thinking is that it seems to be problematic the most when it's been ran for a while when it gets hot. I was thinking and got a new coil for it the other day and still didn't notice a difference. I am going to try another Wells DR100 ignition module like the one I got it tomorrow from Autozone. Maybe that one is fried or something.Since, they are only like $13, shouldn't be too much of a problem. that thing was a little funky ever since I did the conversion. I remember you had to switch the blue and red wires around on the pulsar and I feel like I got a pretty good smooth seat to it with the di-electric grease on a piece of angle. I broke the little plastic nipple off too, but i remember I did have problems getting the ground part tightened good with the black wire on the other end. i still check it from time to time to see if it is still tight, because I had to rig it. I did the HEI conversion about 7 or 8 months ago it seems.

Re: Hard starting problems for gas 2 cycle...
New module (may be) I've seen new parts defective. Also may I add (right on) remove the nipple apply the heat sink grease and as for the ground you could simply drill a hole in your angle mount which has your module mounted to it and ground it there with a small bolt lock washer and nut. Same effect because the module will be grounded by the mounting screws. Try that and get back.

Re: Hard starting problems for gas 2 cycle...
Well, i got the new ignition module on. It did fire up better, but there was still a delay. It almost seems like a very faint hum before firing off. There has been something else that I noticed that was intermittent. Sometimes I notice that my F&R switch will go backwards while in forward and vice versa. It doesn't do it all the time, but sometimes. It's kind of old it looks like. I would like to replace it with a new one, but have been unable to find one for my 81. I am not paying over 100 for one anyway. I try wiggling the shifter handle sometimes and that has seemed to help on the start up delay at times. I sure hope it's not the starter causing the delay.

Re: Hard starting problems for gas 2 cycle...
sometimes my 87 2PG requires that I pull the F/R handle about a 1/4" away from the stop for it to properly engage the starter motor. I've also used some contact cleaner/ oil liberally sprayed in & around the contact area while working switch back & forth with good luck.
