Default What kind of motors can go in 90 ez go GXT 800?

I purchase a 1990 gxt 800 but it seems kinda weak. It runs great but wont hardly pull two people up a mild hill. Is there a way to get more out of this244 robins motor or can you put a bigger motor in it?

You should have the 3PG two stroke motor in there, generating 11hp. This was as good as it got for that series of cart. Now you can put a bigger engine in there but if you want a reverse gear you will also need to replace the rear axle.

That said the 3PG is quite a trooper and should do better than you are getting. I think that the first step would be for you to measure the compression ratio and get back to us. Anything less than 100 psi is going to be cause for concern. The good news is that there are plenty of rebuild kits available and you an rebuild the top end for ~$200 or a complete engine kit for ~$400.

I know its a 2 stroke 244 robins 1 cylinder. I love the way its set up with the reverse switch and the automatic start and stop. Could the clutch not be engaging correctly? The lady I bought it from said she thought it needed a clutch belt or clutch something and thats why they parked it. I only gave her $150 for it and got running with just a little carb cleaning so I think I can do a little work to it and have a fun little cart to play on. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated as I am very new to the cart world and dont know much about them. I would like to lift it a little widen it a little and put a paint job on it and ride around with the kids in the back on halloween.
Thanks for all the help

Interesting....mine must be newer, obviously. Could have sworn it was a 90. Thee 804's are heavy beasts. Knowing how my twin pulls I can imagine how the 2 stroke runs.

OK so it is a two stroke. In that case I would check the compressions as mentioned above. This will give you a fair idea of where your engine is.

It could be as simple as replacing the belt. As the belt is only gripped on the edges that is where it wears. It should be 1 3/16th wide. If it is down to 1 1/16 or less that will have a significant effect on performance.

Many folks (myself included) fit a slightly shorter belt which increases low end performance and hill climbing ability although it is a misnomer to state that the belt increase power.
