Default fuel pump on a 1981 ezgo harley

I just repaired my fuel pump with a rebuilt kit. It seems to be working, but I was wondering what I can use as a spacer under the fuel pump. It has a plastic type insulator right know. I put a piece of aluminum flat stop there instead but it leaks gas.Is it needed or can I use a gasket material to fill that space?
