Default Rebuilt engine wont start

97 ezgo. 295cc robin. Just rebuilt the motor. Had a broken rod. after assembly starter had a hard time turning it over. May be a weak battery. Hooked a charger to it and it finally started to crank over. Motor would do nothing but turn over. if you place hand over carb you feel tons of vacuum. There is plenty of gas getting through carb. had it fire a few times but out the carb. It literally caught on fire. Checked the timing four times with a screwdriver in the spark plug hole watching the valves as i turned the motor over buy hand. Valves seem to appear to open and close when they are supposed to. That with the good vacuum at the carb convinces me it is in time. I have checked the pulsar and it reads 248 ohms. removed it and it appeared worn. checked the coil and it read 44 ohms. Dont know what else to do.

If your certain the timing marks are correct recheck you valve adjustment I don't have one but understand they are very picky about valve adjustment. It sound like the valve timing is off.

I have rechecked the timing AGAIN!! Everything seems to be opening and closing like it should. However when i put the engine together i did put the timing mark on the cam down instead of up like the book shows. However since there is no number one plug and both cylinders fire at the same time this would not matter. Correct??? My compression tester is toast but it works enough to see the needle move. on one cylinder I got up to 60 psi on my leaking tester. on the other the needle did not move. Did recheck the valve last. they are all set at .004. I am getting stumped. about to take the engine out and go through it again. AGHHHHH

Install the cam marks as shown in the book. You valve timing is 180 out which will result in false compression readings due to the valves opening and closing at the wrong time. If you really want to see if you have compression on both cylinders simply back off all the valves so they will not open then check it. Bet you'll find out you do in fact have compression on both cylinders..

ok so i backed the valves off and still only had compression on one cylinder. so i took the motor back out and got it on the bench. Since my compression tester is shot i robbed it for parts and made is so i can blow compressed air into the cylinder. it came out the opposite spark plug hole. Bad head gasket. It is a new one but seems pretty cheap to me. I am very experienced with cars but this is my first robin engine. pulled the head off and there was oil in between the head and block. no damage to the gasket it still has the white coating on it. what do i do now??

Well got to thinking about it and how do i have compression in one cylinder and not the other when i got a cross flow of air from one cylinder to the other.
Im going to clean it all up put it together again and since i have the manual now I know how to time the motor although i dont see how it can be 180 out since both pistons move up and down together and both plugs fire at the same time. but ive been wrong before and well my wife says all the time. I hope it goes ez this time. LOL Ever if I get it running ill post it.

Motor ran on only one cylinder before. Did rebuild because the rod broke.

You may have to lap the valves and I would get a piece of tempered glass and with some wet or dry 320 grit run the head in a cross pattern and see if it has high or low spots. If not flat keep going until you have it surfaced flat. Sorry but I'm a cheap butt.
