Question 2 stroke Robins engine, won't start.

have just bought an '89 marathon, was a non starter but got it going after a bit of fiddling with wiring and fuel. after getting it running, but not very well, it won't start again!! have a spark, seems to be plenty of compression. fuel pump is ok ( i think) it spurts fuel out of pipe, not sure if this is right or not. have had jets cleaned on carb. spluttered a bit today and nearly fired up but didn't! HELP!! any ideas?? thanks

Is the plug wet or dry?
Did you try another plug?
Who cleaned the carb, was it a full tear down and soak using a torch cleaning kit.

Good questions being asked. I am a little different. I have a routine I have learned over the years to help me get at what is ailing an engine that is new to me. Understand, this is a "new" engne to me. If an engine is hard starting I start troubleshooting by:
1. hooking up my shop battery: a cheap Wally world lawn tractor battery.
2. remove the spark plug and check for spark. I simply put a finger on the electrode and hold the plug in my hand and firmly against the head. I get a little tingle but it is unmistakable indication of ignition. most of these scoots have an AC ignition system that does not have a highly visible spark.
3. Do a compression test. you must have a least 100pse to start. You cannot reliably test compression any way without a known compression gauge.

Now I am ready for to try to figure out why it won't fire off.

Cheers

I believe you should be able to see a decent spark. I use a " spark tester " set at ⅛".

So True Simpleman, I see a spark every time. I even move the plug in and out from ground just to see how far the spark will jump.
