87 ez go 244cc motor installation
I just bought my first cart... a 1987 EZ GO Marathon. It came with a 244cc Robin motor, that has been rebuilt, but not istalled. I had to order the Drive pulley and it should arrive tomorrow. As I try to figure out how to install the motor, I noticed that there is no where to put oil in the motor, and the previous gas has a oil mixture. Is this typical for this motor and what can I expect as far as performance?

Welcome to BGW! Nice cart. You should get pretty good performance if the engine rebuild went well. Friend of mine had one and it was a good all around cart. More than likely you'll need to premix your fuel (gas/2 cycle oil) unless the injector pump is working properly. Not sure what the ratio is but someone else here will know.

Welcome to the forum!
You have a 2-cycle engine that requires a oil/gas mix to run. A 4 cycle engine, like your car, requires the oil to be inside the engine. Check out this thread and consider pm'ing mb523. He has a wealth of knowledge on your cart which is just like his. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...go-clutch.html Good Luck |

Re: 87 ez go 244cc motor installation
I was wondering if someone could tell me what the mixture ratio is for this motor, and would a shorter drive help with my performance? This year I want to get it running. I will be using it for deer season this year, and will make additional changes/upgrades next year.

I think I found the gas mixture ratio... 1.5oz per gallon. Can someone verify my findings? thanks!

Re: 87 ez go 244cc motor installation
Yes 1.5oz for each Gallon is a good mixture to use. You can go a lean as 1oz to 1 Gallon, but only if it is not used for continuous driving for extended periods of time. I have used the 1.5oz to 1 gallon mix for about two years now with no problems.
There is a shorter belt that can increase your torque some, but it also makes your cart creep when starting it and can sometime make starting on inclines and hills impossible unless you put it in reverse to back down the grade. I recommend sticking with a stock belt, instead shim your driven pulley with a washer or two to keep it from fully engaging into its highest speed position. Also, check your motor now for compression, and keep checking it. These aircooled engines can wear piston rings pretty fast when used the way we use them and keeping the rings fresh is the biggest and best way to keep and improve your perfomance. You should have 120psi with a new rebuild. If it gets down to 110psi, I would swap the rings, at 100psi you've probably worn out the piston, rings, and maybe even the cylinder. Congrats on a great cart. The Marathon you have is the fastest stock cart made by EZ-GO, I know from experience/ racing the others, but doesnt climb quite as good as the other newer model Marathons and TXT's. |

Re: 87 ez go 244cc motor installation
thanks for the info! I have another question... I had my cart running pretty good for about 10mins or so, it backfired and now nothing. I don't think it's firing now... any ideas to correct this issue?

Re: 87 ez go 244cc motor installation
Yep, you blew your crank seals out more than likely or at least loosened them.
Heres what you do to check: Get a Cigar, and light it, then get a big puff of smoke and blow it in the crank case pressure tube that runs from the engine up to the fuel pump. This will put smoke into the crank case and it will escape through the seals if they are not properly sealed. Sometimes you can simply press them back in and sometime they need to be replaced. |
