1985 marathon--no spark
so we have still not gotten the cart fixed, but the first problem that is going to be taken care of as of now is the no spark....the ignition coil has gone bad, so I am wondering if i can just buy any old ignition coil from an auto parts store and put the stock spark plug wire on it, would that work? can i do the hei conversion instead of buying the new coil or does it require one? any feedback is helpful!

Re: 1985 marathon--no spark
I'd think an automotive coil would work as they are both twelve volt.If it were my cart I'd sure give it a try.You shouldn't have to convert just to use a different coil.If your coil is bad, converting to HEI won't solve that. You still need a coil.Converting to HEI you can surely use an automotive coil.I have one in my cart right now.

Re: 1985 marathon--no spark
Okay probably going to do the conversion eventually....as of right now, my neighbor (electrician) messed with some of the wires, said possibly a bad ground, and we have spark going again....put a new fuel pump on the cart (got good flow when turning engine over), now we just cant get it to kick on....I'm thinking about going and renting a compression test from autozone this weekend, getting a compression reading, and hopefully we get some answers there...i'm at a loss right now....i'm going to try and use an air driven wrench on the clutch bolt to see if it can go any tighter to in order to make sure it's not loose on the crankshaft at all (i don't think it is but doesnt hurt to check)....hopin i can get this thing running in the next week-and-a-half!!

You got zero on a compression test. Both sides?

I tested the spark plug hole....is'nt that the only place you can test? it's a 2pg motor

Re: 1985 marathon--no spark
Why don't you remove the spark plug and poke a screwdriver in the hole until you feel the piston. Now get a buddy to turn the engine by rotating the drive clutch. Do you fell the screwdriver going up and down?

Re: 1985 marathon--no spark
That will definitely be the next test Dave! last night I removed the exhaust and was trying to turn her over and the engine was sounding more close to starting than it has in a while, the was fire coming out of the pipe and it was pumping so I'm pretty sure fuel and spark are good....piston check is going to happen next

Re: 1985 marathon--no spark
Tested to make sure that the piston is there and working properly, and it is...seems like it is pretty snug and tight inside the cylinder as well. Now that the exhaust is off the engine seems like it is right at the point before it kicks on, no backfire anymore into the engine (so i'm guessing that the exhaust might need to be BBQ'ed to unclog it some....when we try cranking the engine it's getting fuel, and theres plenty of spark to ignite the fuel and you can see it igniting and then blowing smoke/flame through the exhaust pipe....Here's a video of what we're looking at as of right now....i feel like it's RIGHT THERE!
