Big tires on ezgo marathon
I keep reading that even with a lift you can't go any bigger than 22" tires on these carts. What is the reasoning behind this... I am wanting to build a drop axle for my 83 marathon and I don't see why you couldn't go high enough to clear 25" atv tires... Am I missing something? What is li
Iting this tire size |

Re: Big tires on ezgo marathon
First thing, when you put taller tires on, you sacrifice power for more top speed. As a guess, I'd say that 25" tires would make the cart so sluggish you'd barely be able to pull any sort of hill at all. After that, if you did get up to speed down a hill you'd be going so fast that the brakes wouldn't handle it.Also your center of gravity would be so high that you'd roll it over just thinking about a curve. Finally, I'm not sure if there is an available lift kit that will put it up high enough to clear those tires.

Re: Big tires on ezgo marathon
To add to what Heliarc posted...Im thinking being an 83 its a resistor style cart and adding the weight of the lift and what it would take to get those tires moving your gunna have heat problems as well...and with tires that big when your make any left hand turns the tire will catch the brake pedal...

Re: Big tires on ezgo marathon
Well I'm not really worried about the lift kit part of it as I own a metal shop and I can fab the lift however I want... But the brake thing was something I hadn't thought of yet... I'm not really worried about top speed and more about torque so I was going to do the shorter belt mod. I would also widen the front axle when i build the new one.Maybe my aspirations of 25" tires is a little much... But what about 23"?

Re: Big tires on ezgo marathon
I have seen it... just take into account that a jump from 18 to 23" tires is an increase of around 30% in final drive ratio... torque would be reduced significantly. I'm doubt a belt change is going to come close to getting that lost torque back. So you may need a gear change or a hp adjustment.

I have seen some of these older carts with 25" and 23" wheels they do ok but you will lose some low end torque. Take a look at the marathon club threads and you can get some great ideas from them.

Re: Big tires on ezgo marathon
If its' a Gasser,22's will be it,anything more and it will die on a mild-grade(trust me on this,I did every trick I could to mine before I Big-Blocked it)They are only 8hp,and way under-powered.Being Electric, you can always upgrade the motor and controls(resistors).Another weak-link is the axle-shafts.They are quite small and tend to snap with more torque and tires over 22".The lift is the easy-part,they are so simple its' ridiculous.Hope this helps.
