Default 1981 Ezgo Golf Cart Starter/Generator Smoking

Gang,

I 'inherited' a very old, what I believe to be, Ezgo golf cart (year from father-in-laws clams).

Running find for the first two weeks I had it.

Today, I was running it and 'pedal to the medal' for a minute and it hesitated a bit. Got back to the driveway (on a hill) and the engine 'conked' out.

O1) Starter/generator smoking under a bolt. Also noticed smoking at the battery (so I am thinking short?)
2) Starter/generator is actually 'turning'. I took the belt off the starter/generator and it freely spins when gas pedal is pressed
3) Originally there was some clicking sounds, but those are basically gone now (solenoid?)
4) I did see a spark from the same area as the generator
5) I can easily turn the other belt
6) There is plenty of gas in the engine
7) Smokes even without the belt attached to the starter/generator

Batter is at 11.57 volts.

To be honest, I am relatively car/cart illiterate and could use some help diagnosing. I'd like to learn a bit more about the car from this process.

Anyone's help and insight is greatly appreciated.

First off, one by one, check your connections.A bad connection can cause resistance and heat which might make it smoke.Take a terminal loose, clean it good, and put it back on.Repeat this for all wires to the starter/generator and the battery terminals.Get every wire that runs to the frame and every other wire you feel comfortable doing this with.On such an old cart it's a good place to start.

Also make sure the starter/generator bolts are tight it may be trying to seek ground between the generator bracket and the generator. Welcome to BGWCharge the battery also your battery voltage is low at 11.? you should have about 12.7 K
