driven clutch locking up
I have an 87 exgo 2cycle cart. This weekend we were riding along and all at once the back tires locked up and it would not move forward. I put it in reverse the cart backed up so i put it back in forward and it went a little ways and did it again. so I tried backing up to camp in reverse but it locked up in it to. Can the driven clutch locking up cause the rearend to lock up and not move?
Thanks for any help! |

Re: driven clutch locking up
It sounds more like you have a bearing or gear-failure in the rear-axle.Put the cart on jack-stands,remove the belt and rotate the Driven-clutch.See if you hear or feel anything. Also, grab the clutch and see if it has movement up/down or in /out.That will mean a Pinion-Bearing Failure. You can also pull the cover(put a drain-pan under it first)and look around inside to see if anything looks out of place,or damaged. If you have never dealt with gear-oil,its' nasty smelling and it stays with you, wear some rubber-gloves if you have them and don't like the smell of sewage on your hands for a while.Hope this helps.

Re: driven clutch locking up
First thing I did was pull the cover on the differential I was a mechanic for 7 years and was hoping to find metal shavings or debris that was catching making it lock up. But when it comes to the clutches I'm lost lol. I'm headed back out now to pull the clutch off the pinion shaft . If you coast the cart down hill it will not lock up. When you give it gas and get moving it locks that is the only reason i was thinking the driven clutch. I put it on jack stand and ran it and with out a load on it, it takes longer to lock up.
Thanks for the info if you have anymore it is greatly appreciated i will let you know what i find when i pull the clutch off |

Re: driven clutch locking up
good diagnosis got the clutch off found not much play in pinion so i pulled axles which is no fun and spun the ring gear and it is rough and glitchy and very noisey coming form pinion i have to bring a socket home to pull the spline off the front
Thanks alot for your help plus bearings are alot cheaper. it makes since now that when the bearing locked it slammed the clutch and locked it |

Re: driven clutch locking up
