Default fuel timing

i have a 1983 with a 244 robins, when i got it in needed a new head gasket and had like new piston and rings, the fuel pump worked good till i tore it apart after it would not start one night and went out and got a new one. the new pump works great (when manually blowing in to the bottom) but it will only pump a large amount of fuel when i take off the line to the tank and pump sluggishly when it is connected. the vacuum in the motor is good, (blows anything i set on top of the port right off) but is not pumping in fuel, is it still the vacuum or do i need to set it into a timing???

How is the fuel-system in general? Are the lines all good,no leaks, loose clamps,or restrictions?Unhook the line from the pump to tank at the pump, try to blow thru it.It should be fairly easy to do.if not, there is a restriction in the line or pick-up in the tank.

yep all good, even though i just rebuilt the carb if i cover the inlet i get gas in hand, no start, if i spray ether or put gas in it willl start, run slow with full choke and running sluggish!! or take off choke and and run really well for about 20 feet and then die.

I am in the same boat with the fuel spacer. They actually call it an insulator. I found someone who has them, can't remember who right now, it is on the computer at home. I ordered one last week. Haven't received it yet...

My problem was that the lower jet was clogged. I had taken the carb apart 4 times before I even realized there was a jet there. (its the one in the screw that holds the bowl on).

Anyway, I got an electric fuel pump from autozone ( 1-3 psi ) for 44 bucks. When I get the new insulator I will try to go back to the factory system.

If you really think its the fuel pump, an electric one may be the way to go.

Do you have a clear fuel filter? Try your best to get all the air out of it. When you start it and run it like you stated above. When it dies check the fuel filter for air. If there is air you have some cavitation in sucking up fuel.

3/8th fuel like back to the tank makes a big difference on these.

Cheers Don.

thanks all! a pin hole in the tank hose and a couple of loose hoses. shooting about an inch or 2 now. so happy to get it back into where it needs to be. this cart is the lemon year but you wouldn't know it if you ran it on the streets a lot. motor frame, starter charger brakets are crap, and bad mufflers! (always blowout) now get the last few things cleaned up and and hope nothing goes wrong, just getting the only muffler in the state i think for that year tomorrow.

So, the fuel pump needs between 1 to 3 psi for the carb to run good? I'm having issues with my 2PG motor. I've ran new fuel line from pump inlet, directly into tank, bypassing all the line to and into the tank, and still no go. It will try to run with choke closed, and start to sound good, push the choke in and it will start to rev up, but not enough to engage the clutch. And then die, sometimes I can get it to roll a foot or two before dying. I'm thinking fuel pump, and thought about an electric one to help diagnose the issue. I've done the pull the outlet line from pump and it shoots up about 3/4", and I've read it needs to be 1.5" flow to 5-6" flow straight up.

The motor has not been touches since we got it, about 5 years ago. It ran good last year, but when I parked it last fall, it started giving me issues, similar to what is going on now. It went from screaming around the camp grounds, to trying to run basically overnite.

Not trying to jack the thread, just trying to keep similar problems together.

Has anyone checked their gas cap to see if the vent hole is plugged?
