Default flywheel puller tool

Hello! I'm working on what I believe to be a 1989 ezgo 2 stroke engine. specifically, changing the crankshaft seals in hopes of eliminating the hard hot starts, and rich running I understand to be associated with a loss of the crankcase pulse pressure that operates the fuel pump. But that's beside the point because I can't get past the flywheel without destroying the slotted end of the crankshaft. I fashioned a basic puller that would work if I could devise some sort of protective slotted cap to cover that 2 stroke oil pump drive end on the shaft, but before I went all backyard engineer I figured I should pass this problem around the forum where I'm sure many of you have encountered this issue at some time, and might have a method of flywheel removal that dose'nt end in a steel mushroom head, and premixed gas from here on out, or at least point me in the direction of a specialty tool supplier where I could buy the correct puller. Cheers!

Well going premix isn't such a bad thing, in fact many folks distrust the oil pump and premix as a matter of course, however that doesn't answer your question. I used a cheap two arm steering wheel puller and a spare 1/2 inch socket as a sacrifice piece which I simply inserted over the end of the crankshaft. If you have not pulled the flywheel before, it can be a bit of a bear. I recommend a good soak in PB Blaster or similar before you start. If it doesn't come then a tap on the screw with a mallet will shock it and then more tension on the puller. Do not be tempted to get a lever under there as you will crack the aluminum.

Dave, thanx for the response. I ended up cutting a small section of a dowl pin and using that as the impact surface. POP! fly wheel came right off with no damage to the end of the shaft. Attached should be a picture of the puller tool I made for other's future reference. I used a hollow steel spacer that fit closely with the tip of the shaft, and the bolt used to drive the puller. The small dowl insert went in between the tip of the bolt, and the tip of the shaft. Cheers!

Yeah, I had to fashion a few custom tools to move forward with this project so far. here's a pic. the first is the clutch removal tool. it was the same thread as a wheel stud, but the stud was too short, so I used a section of steel pin to make up the difference. Ground down the head of the stud to fit in a 3/4" impact socket so I could hit it with the gun. The second tool is just a little slide hammer for pulling seals made out of a grease gun pipe, and fitting ends, with a heavy "bobtach" pin from a bobcat machine as the slider. And the last is a seal installer made from a leg of one of those institutional stainless steel kitchen tables. Simple stuff, but I would have been stymied without them. DIY or die!
