Question one good push

i have a 1983 244cc in it. i just replaced all the lines, pump, head and sleeve gaskets. cleaned carb and adjusted properly. has a really good spark but when you crank it, it will fire one time only with some ether and or gas or on full choke but will only fire once about every 3-5 seconds and thats it. plug is new and coil seems to be working right. so what is left, if i hold it at 1/2 throttle and hit it with ether over and over it will not fire except when it hits that "sweet spot"

ether .... if it won't start with plan gas .... go back and look at the carb again ...ether will send that engine in to la.. la.. land right fast ..

stronger start up with gas but still only firing every 3-5 sec, charging the battery now though. low battery has no impact on the coil right? might have started but was about 10 volts so....

ether is a NO, one to many squirts of ether will wash the rings right out of the motor, hope you didn't hurt it already,, need to do a compression test, did you change the crank seals ?

Is the plug getting wet or dry when you try to start it (without dumping gas/ether in it)? If it's wet you have a ignition problem if it's dry you have a carb/fuel issue. Plenty of good advice here , but, you need to figure out which direction to work on.

FYI- My 91 Marathon would only run with the choke 90% pulled out (140 psi compression, good spark and clean carb)- and it was running rough at that.

My issue was bad crankshaft seals (both were bad)- this severely leans out the mixture.

no, i did not get to the seals yet, just changed the rings though. still doing the same thing, might be the seals then, oh and the wire to the plug was not getting a good connetion. was only giving a little spark. but had it started after i cleaned that then a no go again. just like it was. then the rings still the same, going to have to get the seals when i can. and yes it is getting gas, had a very wet plug....

These things only need three things to run, good compression, fuel and spark. If you have good gas and a wet plug and I assume good compression with the new rings your problem is most likely spark. I just went thru it with mine, I had good compression, wet plug, and what i thought was a good spark. Replaced the coil and mine ran great. I went ahead and did the HEI conversion as described in the sticky and it never ran better.

Also, if it's getting fuel to your cylinder the crankshaft seals are probably good. When the seals are bad and leak there's not enough vaccum to run the fuel pump and you won't be getting a good supply of gas to the cylinder. There are other things that could be causing your problem but most likely electrical.
