Will a 1989 engine fit
In my 1987 cart? Direct bolt on?
I think it is a 3 pg and believe mine is a 2 pg |

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
I'm not sure (and someone else can hopefully clarify) that the 3pg is setup or designed to run backwards for reverse gear as your 2pg is (considering the 89's and up had an actual shifting rear axle so the engines were only required to run normally) - that could be an issue ... in *theory* it should be fine provided you hook it all up per 86 specs but you may have to reuse your starter, etc - anyone else want to chime in here?
Also, that 88 crossover saw some changes to the exhaust, starter/generator, etc that continued into 89 - shouldn't be *too* much hassle but make sure you get all the exhaust, starter, etc mounts you can with the new motor as it may save you some fabbing later on |

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
Thanks for the reply Brew! I was looking at the for sale section and saw an 89 cart with a bad rear axle, was wondering if it was worth the parts to fix mine, but f I need an axle for a 3 pg engine to fit....

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
Again, don't toally *quote* me, but I do recall seeing someone try it a couple of years ago and it was a hassle for them ... In theory, the 3PG should act as the 2PG provided you retain your starter/generator as well as all the wiring, etc (the 89-up starters are different, but I would assume that's due to them not being required to be bidirectional as yours is) - I'd just hate to see you throw money away.
What's with your engine - a total bottom-up rebuild is only a few hundred bucks and a day or two, if it's just the top end it can be done with simple hand tools in a couple of hours - is it still froze up (I seem to remember You having that issue earlier in the project) ??? |

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
Thanks, yes still frozen. I can't seem to catch a brake on this thing.
I start at it and sliced my thumb open, DEEP. I waited for it to completely heal (or at least stop oozing blood and puss droplets) and then hurt my back two weeks ago helping a friend of ours put a lift on her husband's new truck so she could surprise him when he returns from deployment. No relief in yet, but it is getting better. I plan on attempting, hopefully, the engine tear down this weekend. Luckily, I will have a warm detached garage for the winter to mess with it. My 75,000 btu gas heater is being installed today. |

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
it a lot of work to swap them. i picked up a 3pg before i knew that it was a 3pg and was going to swap it for a 2pg. the engines sit different in the carts so that's the big difference, the exhaust of not the same. i ended up selling the cart and engine and picked up a different cart

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
interseting, The 89's with the 3pg's in them only have forward axles, The 4 cycle carts have the forward and reverse axles. I have a 89 3pg and a 88 2pg cart. The heads are differant and the exhaust. If people can swap in snowmoble engines I don't see where it would be that difficult to swap the 3 pg for the 2 PG.they are both FUJI engines

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
The EZ-GO 2-strokes all had direct-drive,no transmission. They all reversed thru the engine running-direction.

Re: Will a 1989 engine fit
What year did that change? I am looking for a direct bolt on axle (swing arm type) from a four stroke.
