Default Comet 780 clutch

Should the clutch stop turning or just open wide enough for the belt to stop turning? What is the RPM level that the motor should idle at for the clutch to deactivate? thanks BigTex

Everything is working good, I guess. I just wanted to know more about the rpms the clutch should start to close at & the rpms it should be fully open again after it slows down. BigTex

Most all of the CVT Comet clutches are adjustable (can be set to engage at different rpms), maybe you should ask Comet about it.

Ruredy, I'm not trying to adjust the clutch, I just wanted to when the clutch should be fully closed and when it should open again. I was wondering about a shorter drive belt, like the thread above that you wrote. How do you know when the belt is too short? I would guess when the cluch was open but the belt is too tight to spin on the clutch? BigTex

I think I understand what's going on now. On the belt deal, Are you using the 480 belt? How did you end up mounting the engine? If you have it where you can slide the engine back some it will be the same as putting a longer belt on it. The stock belt on the 480 is as short as that setup should have, with your change to the 18hp it may have moved the clutch forward some making the belt to tight. I don't know the sizes on that belt but I would guess you could find a little bit longer one from napa or maybe a sled shop. maybe tom knows what size they are vs what you need. I'm sure Tom's engine cradle would not have worked because of how the front mount is and the locker part on the axle.

Ruredy, I went with a 16 hp 303440, so it is really close to original. Except it has a 1" shaft, 780 comet clutch and a keyed starter on it. Yes, it still has the same belt on it. My belt may be perfect, i'm not for sure. The cart seems to load up a little too much before it starts to move. This may be normal, but I would like it to be a little more peppier than it is. BigTex
