Default when to do complete rebuild?

So the old 84 marathon is in need of some work.I planned on buying a whole rebuild kit . Top and bottom. I was wondering if a person could just replace the crank bearings etc, in the bottom end instead of buying the complete rebuild kit. So I guess the question is when should a person replace the crank . I think it would be cheaper to just replace bearings then buy a new crank . Just trying to stretch the all mighty buck so i can buy more new parts.

It all depends on how many times you feel like pulling the engine out really. I would rather only do it once myself.

Ya. That is a good point. I know I should do the whole thing but just feeling tight in the wallet. Wish I was born rich instead of beautiful.

It is a tough call. I rescued mine from the woods and it had been driven until it seized and then beaten to death with a sledgehammer (at least that's how it looked), so I had no choice. I replaced the upper and lower and then had to replace the carburetor and the fuel pump. That's the bad news but the good news is that the engine starts on about the first revolution and I outpace all my friends with their 4 stroke 2000 + machines. A fresh 2PG is a great engine.

Good luck

Dave

I just replaced my crank bearings and crank seals about 2 months ago on my 3pg engine. If the crank has any play at all, then you should replace the bearings. I still have fairly good compression (120 psi) so I am going to wait a while longer before I replace the piston and jug. I was able to replace the bearings myself without using a press.

While you have the crankshaft out, you should check the rod bearing for up and down play (side to side play is expected). If it is loose, then you have to buy a whole new crankshaft/rod assembly.

Thanks for the replys guys. I think I will pull the motor out and strip it down and go from there. Then I can decide if if i need the whole rebuild kit.
