Default 1990 marathon 2 stroke with low compression

Just bought a 1990 ezgo marathon with gx444 2 stroke. It didn't have a muffler on it and there was oil on the tailpipe. Oil injector system bypassed. Took it to the shop and had a muffler put on.

It has very low power. Probably about 3 mph max after about 5 min.

They said when it gets hot the compression dropped to 70 psi. They recommended a new jug and piston. I found a top end repair kit for this model for $200. Is this what I need and is this a hard fix?

Thanks for your help

70 psi is pretty low. Yes, a jug/piston kit will fix the compression issue. Go ahead and replace the crankshaft seals and check the crankshaft bearings for play while you have the engine out.

The top end fix is pretty straight forward. As kyerik stated, save yourself future troubles and go ahead and replace the seals and perform the bearing inspection. May be a good idea to inspect everything before ording anything. This video has helped numerous people, including myself.
