Default 2006 EZ Go TXT exhaust

Hey guys, first time poster, long time lurker

First the problem: very strong exhaust smell when I push the gas pedal, occasional backfire when decelerating.

The facts : 2006 EZ GO with a robins 295cc engine. compression on both cylinders is 115-120 psi. checked spark plugs and found dark soot and oil on them. Replaced and still have issue. I researched and checked the choke setting.

Could I still be getting blowby with that kind of compression (I assume the cylinders wouldn't hold that psi with blowby)

Any tips? I tried to adjust valves a while back, if I did it wrong, could that be the issue?

Thanks guys and I look forward to being an active member here.

Those compression numbers are pretty low for that engine. Re check your valve adjustment. Make sure the cam lobes are pointing straight down and set to .004" for each one. Test run or redo the compression check. If it is still low ,you will need to look deeper into your motor.

160 would be nice, but will still run at those numbers.Have you tried running it again? How do the plugs look now. It will take some wide open running to get the plugs to clean up on their own.

I have. Still has an extremely strong exhaust smell.

Wonder if it needs some more running to clear out the crud

New plugs and carb cleaning, sounds like too much fuel as in float valve not seating properly. The fuel we get now with ethenal in it is hard on the carbs. When you get it running correctly run 90 plus octane fuel in it. I don't know about other states, but in NY 90 plus octane fuel does not contain ethenal.

140 pounds of compression is ok, 165 on a brand new motor, do you have any exhaust leaks?
