88 2pg runs poorly even after rebuild, etc. aaauuuggh!

OK, it's a long story, and super frustrating. My cart was running worse and worse until it would be very hard to even get going sometimes.

So, I took apart and cleaned the rebuilt carb I bought 3 years ago. No love.

Compression was about 100 psi, so, I replaced the head gasket and rings which didn't help

I replaced the entire freakin' jug and piston (and yes, faced the piston the right way) which didn't help. Compression still at 100 with new piston, jug, rings, etc (??) Now it would run for a little while with very little power and then die out when it started to warm up.

Cranks seals looked a bit old so I replaced those. Also no help. I t did seem to start easier but ran with little power and died off when it started to warm up.

So, new spark plug with HEI conversion. Runs the same.

Fuel pump is pushing plenty of gas.

Starts easily cold.

I tried running it with no muffler in case it's plugged but it didn't help (just annoyed neighbors)

WTF? I feel like I have replaced just about everything possible. I have sunk waaay too much money in parts into this thing!

Oh, I forgot to mention that in the latest drive (slow cirlces in front of driveway) It backfired loudly after about 30 seconds of driving and blew out one of the crankcase seals. And then died, obviously.

And when I removed the flywheel I carefully marked the pulser location, so timing should be unaffected.

Just a thought... I had a few hairline cracks in my case that would have (if the cart would have been running) allowed air passage. I got em welded up, and seems to be ok.

Other suggestions.. ditch the old carb, and buy new. Check reed valves for debris. Having the HEI conv, you might try swapping the pulsar wires around.

The HEI seems to be working fine, extremely strong spark.

I bought the carb new a couple years ago (I said rebuilt, but I think it was actually new).

It's weird that it was running better before I rebuilt it, at least as far as speed. When I could get it running it would get up and go, now it's just weak and can't get the revs up.

I just put it back together and went for a spin. It starts right up but lacks power. Goes better in reverse. Full throttle makes it kill off and sputter a bit occasionally. Drove around for about 30 seconds a heard a little pop. Blew the crank seal out again.

yeah, no luck there either..

I suppose I could buy another new carb :(

But why does it keep blowing out the crank seal?

OK, so I just ordered a new carb and a new fuel pump. After this is done I think I will have replaced everything on this engine except the crank & bearings.

Wow, I don't even want to think. Maybe $500 in parts so far? Ouch.

I know you said you put the piston in right, but are you sure the passages in the piston are facing the carb, and the flat part of the piston is facing the exhaust, ??

I made sure to double check the orientation, so I'm pretty sure.

It wouldn't run at all if it was reversed, right?
