Saturdays Project, 2PG engine, BV18 vs BV24 carb and exhaust
OK - so it's Saturday and I have a finely-tuned maniac of a 1988 EZGO, as well as a 1986 ezgo which just doesn't seem to *quite* be running like it should be (and I'm starting to think it might just be the difference between the HO 1988 2PG and the standard 2PG engines and not the cart itself) ...
SO - the goal is to set up some safety cones (or beer cans, whatever) on the straight, flat, paved part of the driveway (which is roughly 1/3mile long) and do a few timed and a few GPS runs with the 1988, THEN do the same with the 1986. I'm then planning on swapping the BV24 carb onto the 86 and doing a series of runs, THEN I'm going to swap the exhaust onto it too and run them again - in *theory* I should have an increasing set of numbers on the 86 from stock to big carb to big carb and big exhaust, as well as a set of matching numbers with both carts when the 86 is bedecked with the HO carb and exhaust (all other parts seem to be the same, reeds, head, piston, etc) - does anyone have experience swapping out the HO parts onto a standard 2PG and/or a good reason I should skip the tests, maybe something I don't know of that makes this a bad plan? (keep in mind I haven't played with the carts in over a month, it's 60 degrees in WI in November, and there's beer, so I would greatly prefer ideas how to "tweak" the tests than an outright shutdown of the days festivities, LOL) Stay tuned for further developments - and if anyone wants to chime in ideas, etc feel free as I'm going to keep an eye on the thread as I go :) |

Re: Saturdays Project, 2PG engine, BV18 vs BV24 carb and exhaust
OK - Preliminary results are in, here's the deal as I changed the tests a bit:
Test #1: Level ground (paved) 1/8 mile GPS speed, single driver, pedal mashed to floor. 86 2PG stock w/no governor 18.1mph, 86 2PG with BV24 Carb and stock exhaust 19.9mph, 86 2PG with BV24 and 1988 Exhaust 23.0mph .... Control cart (1988 stock no governor) 23.6mph ... Test #2: Uphill (groomed grass) approx 100 yards from dead stop. 86 stock 12.0mph, 86 with BV24 carb 13.1mph, 86 with BV24 and 88 exhaust 14.4mph ... Control Cart (1988 stock no governor) 15.5mph (NOTE: Uphill tests may be a bit decieving in regards to the control cart as it has an HP3004 belt and *does* take off a bit faster with more torque) SO - there it is, bolting on a 1988 carb *does* add a bit of "oomph" to the stock 2PG, but coupled with the HO 1988 exhaust it's a very real and noticeable difference. The clutch on the 86 seems to downshift way too fast, so I'm thinking I may have an issue there too with the hill climb comparison (along with the shorter belt on the 88 as mentioned above) ... Just for fun, here's a shot of the kids, the 86 is in front :) 20121117_121012.jpg.jpg |

Re: Saturdays Project, 2PG engine, BV18 vs BV24 carb and exhaust
The difference between the carbs is actually pretty big - 18mm vs 24mm (or 33% larger) ... I wish there was a way to accurately measure the flow rate(s) of the mufflers but I guess that's a mute point.
The only part #s I wasn't able to match up as identical were the reeds, but everything else is the same on the regular and the HO 2PG (and the reeds *look* identical so I'm assuming they are) - the big question now is it really worth popping $160 for a new 88-only muffler and $80 for a BV24 carb to add that 5mph ... I have an extra 88-only head pipe so the really *difficult to find* part of the swap is done - we'll see. I just needed a day away from everything to mess with the carts, LOL, I guess I have all winter to decide unless I sell the yellow one (I have it on Craigslist for $2k firm, got an offer of $1800 but for that I'd just keep it, having another cool cart around is worth more than the few hundred I'd make on the deal overall). |

Carb venturi is 33% farther across, but the area difference is 254 to 452 mm2, and the area of the throttle shaft is a bigger percentage of the bore area.

Yeah, I saw the 2 year old post date (shy of 4 years...lol), but I'm dinking with an 88 2PG and the thread popped up while a-Google-ing. Neat, rare, case of A-B comparisons, for us dinosaur-wrangling folk
