I hate to tell you what I had to do with mine. We ended up having to use a torch to cut my clutch off. We tried everything under the sun before having to do that. Just be careful not to cut into the crankshaft.

Two suggestions,

The first is to pack the center hole with grease before you insert the rod and the bolt. As you tighten the bolt the grease will compact and the hydraulic effect might be enough.

The second is to beg, borrow, steal or possibly rent an impact wrench. The repeated vibrations could well shock the clutch off.

When I took mine off it had been rusted on for many years, I ended up with a 3 foot cheater bar and even then it took my considerable bulk bouncing on it to pop that sucker.

Good luck

Dave

Sorry I should have explained. I was doing a complete rebuild so I had the cylinder off and I was able to hold the connecting rod in a vice. Strange how one forgets these important details. Another solution that I have heard of (but never tried so feel free to take this with a salt mine) is to feed a length of nylon rope through the spark plug hole and then rotate the engine until the piston jams the rope against the cylinder head, now you can get some leverage.

I've used this method on many small engines... It works!

The rope works great,as does an impact-wrench.Just make sure you lube the threads, and the tip of the puller-bolt(if using a puller).

I just removed my drive clutch. The grease method really didnt work well and was messy. I did remove it with an electric impact (Harbor Freight), 3/4 x 2 fine thread bolt, and piece of 5/8 threaded rod. It took several attempts in and out with the impact, but it did come off without any need to lock down the cylinder rotation. Now I just want my NEW clutch to be delivered so I can test it out!!!

I forgot to add that my attempt to get my clutch off this past summer was a fail.
I used an air impact wrench that had some incredible power but it didn't budge. The clutch still works so I gave up. I'll be interested to find out what ultimately works for you...
