Default Bad transmission, stripped hub or something else?

new here.
cart will always go in reverse but forward has been getting worse over time, dropping off suddenly while driving, with a loud grinding sound near rear of cart. now, it will not even go forward at all. can a stripped rear hub allow the cart to go in reverse but not forward? or is there a more obvious problem? thanks.

Welcome to BGW!

Yes, a stripped hub CAN cause a cart to act this way because the differential is an "open" design. For all intents and purposes, the drivetrain is 1 wheel drive, and all of the torque can be applied to a single wheel. Putting the cart in reverse shifts the torque to the other wheel. Inspect those hubs.

Sounds like it could be a shifter cable streching and not holding it completely in forward, check shift cable to see if it is locking fully in the forward direction

It is a real easy test. Get someone to look at the rear wheels whilst you try to drive forward. If the nut in the center is spinning you have a stripped hub. If you do then it would be good to replace both hubs. It's an easy job and not that expensive. Before you order hubs it would also be good to remove them to see if you need new brakes as well.

Also if you have a stripped hub, EZ-Go has their mechanical disc brake sets on sale again for $199 but you must have at least 10 inch rims to fit.. If you don't have this or want the cheaper route, there are brake hubs out there that are much better than the originals. Ausco is one of the manufactures.. check the sponsors

thanks to all for the suggestions. it appears to be the cable. I can jam the trans in gear with my hand and it will not slip. as soon as I switch from reverse to forward with the lever, the problem comes back. I will adjust the cable and I expect to see the problem solved.

You guys keep blowin my mind . While spraying a pasture the cart just went clunk. No movement. Tried both directions. Looked at both clutches, and they were working as should be. Sh*t! blew the differential. I went up to the house to see what bgw had for information. I read the post about looking to see if the bolt was turning in the middle of the wheel. Well I went back out to the pasture to gave it a try and I'll be darned if the shaft wasn't turning! Went to the dealer got the new parts, and back together, no problem. Thanks again guys, for just being there. The information on this site and willingness to share gives me hope for the human race.
