Default Tach & Speedometer.......

Another newguy post.....

Looking at the options for tach and speedo. Wondering if anyone has used or is useing either TrailTech Vapor or AllTrax Ex-Ray? They are both about the same size and offer basicly the same features. Looks like just the thing for street carts. Could actually be cut into the dash by the key switch on our RXV like a dash guage setup. Pros..... Cons......

I went old school on my cart and put a new vintage looking Sunn Tach on the steering column. The dip switches can be set for 2 cylinder. I used a new chrome sink water pipe to house the wire on the top side of the chrome steering column. What can I say, I like chrome! ~Mike

I have an Equus tach mounted on the steering column (cost was about $12 on Ebay) & use a smartphone app called Ulysse Speedometer on a Droid. The app also records time, path, quarter mile time, 1/8th mile time, etc.. Plus you end up with music & phone on board too.

many GPS units have a speedometer feature as well as odometer, elapsed time, etc and have the ability to be removed when not in use to protect from theft, weather, etc and can be had for under $70 - as to the tach, there are a ton of digital tachs on Ebay that generally are quite accurate, weatherproof, small enough to mount permanently and inconspicuously, and best of all are under $20 shipped ... If You didn't mind having 2 units, the cost would be smaller, there would be no need to fab up sensor mounts on the wheels as well as having to worry about wheel size and calibration, etc, the MAIN unit would be removeable for protection, and You'd end up with basically all the featured plus GPS - just a thought

Can't help on the tach but I hear there are wireless speedometers now made for bicycles. Like $20. Like brew said, you would have to make mounts but don't think you would have to worry about theft.

I like the look of the old school Sun type tach also. There are some nice ones out there too. This RXV EzGo we have is a 1-lunger, a 401cc single. The Tiny Tach is another $2o option. I am still holding out on the smart phone, so far anyway. What I realy liked about the Trail Tech unit was the different options besides Tach and Speedo, you can also have head temp, hour meter, trip milage ect. ect. and all in one unit. So far the places we stay don't have a problem with theft. Unless maybe you leave a nice fishing pole out......
I also noticed that they have an Indicator light dashboard setup for ATVs so that you can add turn signal indicators and several other different lights.
Since this is for the wife more than I ;~))), and she wants that car feel I guess we'll see what happens!!!

I have the trail tech vapor, everything works perfect accept the tach. I have tried many different things to make the tach work properly. My next attempt will be a magnetic crank trigger. The alltrax unit is made by trail tech. If you dont need the tach. the striker or vector would be a good choice.

rvkersh what kind of problems is the tach giving you? That was the main reason I started looking at guages. Also what motor is in your cart?

I have a modified GX620 Honda, the tach is erratic, I have tried the wire wrap around the plug wire, hooking the tach directly to the shut down wire with and without a resistor inline. I then installed a square wave magneto tach driver, that worked perfect for a couple of weeks and then back to sqare one. You may be ok with the wire wrap at the plug being a single cylinder. You may also be able to use your pulsar lead for tach input. Call Trail Tech and talk to a tech, tell them what type ignition you have and they may be able to help you. They are more than willing to help you.

Rvkersh that sounds like a beast!!! It's strange that the square wave magneto tach driver worked so well for a while and then went south on you. I'm just wondering if it's not a connection problem. Like a loose ground or moisture .............. a lot of the electronics are very sensitive as to grounding and especialy moisture. I'm an ol'electrician by trade and those things can dirve me crazzy, and it's usualy something simple that I just overlooked.
