No power, will not climb hills
Ok back again lol! My 88 marathon has been doing ok...but, the problem im having now is take off, it is extremely weak on take off and climbing hills only at low rpm. If i hit a hill at mid to high throttle its fine 20+ mph on pavement, no way will it take off from a stop on any kind of hill or incline, it struggles to take off on level ground but sometimes it does and sometimes the motor just revs and the belt squeaks the cart jerks forward then nothin for few secs...some times but not all the time it will take off in reverse but that is getting worse over time. The belt is new (by previous owner)and i measued it is 1 1/8 widex45' long . Also the governor is and has always been unhooked. All i know of carts ive learned in past month so i really dont know anything just what ive learned on this forum up to date all ive done with same results
new carb (2 weeks ago) bbq muffler/ new gaskets new fuel lines and filter checked compression its 140 f and r new motor mounts 1.5 oz of mix to 1 gallon took apart and cleaned fuel pump new plug ngk bp5hs sorry for long post just trying to be as detailed as possible. Im sure im forgetting somthing ive tried. I have some 22" tires and new wheels i would like to put on but im sure that will only make this problem worse so i would like to fix it before i put on the lift and tires it has stock tires now. Thanks in advance |

Re: No power, will not climb hills
I bet your driven clutch is sticking open causing the cart to try to pull away in high gear. Jack up the back end and observe the clutches as you gently rev the engine. The drive clutch should smoothly move from open to closed and the driven should do the opposite.

Re: No power, will not climb hills
When I had it in the air to check crank seals the clutches seem to be ok but they are not under a load would that matter?

Re: No power, will not climb hills
The clutches work very different under load.
Dave Box is on the right track. Try to take off up a hill when it bogs slam the brakes on and check the position of the clutches. |

Re: No power, will not climb hills
Or remove the rear cover behind the seats and get someone to crouch in the bagwell and observe the clutch action during various phases of driving.

Re: No power, will not climb hills
i drove around today and both the clutches seem to be moving smoothly, also there are no deep grooves or waves i can feel on the discs or plates not sure of the technical term. Is there a way to measure the distance between the plates of the clutch? or a short cut to check for sure which is bad? with the prices ive seen clutches are expensive so i need to be sure. there are no cart mechanics anywhere in my area so im pretty much on my own! the belt thats on it is 1/2 shorter than the one recommended for the 88 the one on it fits a 89 dont have part numbers handy... could that be the issue??? what ive read says that should help the take off, but its almost like its revvivng to quickly if that makes any sense!!!thanks for all the help and im definately making progress, just this last whatever bug needs to be worked out, im also certain there are no tiny air leaks or loose clamps all this has been checked numerous times!! no change with airbox unhooked etc.
