Default Drive Clutch Help

I'm currently rebuilding a 1993 Ez Go 295 for my father-in-law. I've always worked on my own vehicles but this is my first small engine. When I first started disassembling the drive clutch I made the mistake of removing the 6 small bolts on the drive clutch cover. I don't remember the spring twisting off the cover all that much but want to be sure I get it back together correctly. I'm just not sure how far to twist it. Is there a way to check to make sure it's operational just by turning it by hand? I live in IL and my father-in-law lives in KY and he just brought the engine up over Christmas so I won't be able to test anything out. He'll just be getting the engine back to put in on his own so I want to make sure it's good to go. Are there any "how to's" on reassembling a drive clutch?

I'm going to mess with it some more and maybe post some pics so you see what I'm talking about. To post pics on here do we just use a hosting site and post the image link?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome Grunt The drive clutch spring is flat on both ends yes ? If so no clocking required. Clocking is done on the driven. Some folks on here does shim the drive spring for different use other than stock. Man your starting off a great marriage messing up the father-in-laws cart.

I'm going on 13 years of marriage so maybe I should screw up the engine!

The spring has the little bend on each end where it fits into a holes so maybe it's the driven clutch? In order to line up the bolt holes you have to clock it counterclockwise a little bit, maybe 3" or so I just don't know if I have to clock it even more. If so, I'm going to have to clock it maybe 6" more since there are 6 bolts and they are spaced out in pairs. I didn't pay that much attention to it when I removed it but I sure don't remember it springing that far to the right but figured I'd better check.

Thanks for the help racin!

If the clutch is attached to the engine it is the drive clutch. Sorry I haven't had one of this type apart only the one with the flat spring again which you can shim. Maybe someone else has this type of clutch.

Thanks Racin.....I'm pretty sure I have it assembled correctly. I guess if for some reason I don't, it wouldn't be all that difficult to pull it off and twist it to the next set of bolt holes.

I have the engine completely torn down. I'm just waiting on parts now. The reason for the rebuild was due to it smoking. The culprit ended up being a broken ring. Everything else looked good on it except for the crankshaft bearing which had a crack. I ordered all new gaskets, seals, and bearings. He should get plenty of hours out of the engine after the rebuild.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Hey MarineGrunt, here is a video that might confirm what you have done. If it is not the same model of clutch it does show the general principle of clocking.

Thanks for the video Dave. The clutch in question is the one that is on the engine which I believe is the primary clutch and not the secondary. The clutch on the engine doesn't have any keyway or anything to line up. It has the black housing with 6 small bolts that holds it on. You just twist the black cover to line up the bolt holes. I just don't know how far to twist it. When you remove the 6 bolts the housing and spring will twist off. There wasn't much pressure so I believe I have it assembled correctly but I'm not positive. I wish I had the whole cart here so I could throw it back on once I'm done with the engine rebuild. If it didn't work I could then adjust it.

If anyone happens to have the primary drive clutch off on their workbench, and wouldn't mind taking the black cover off to see how it goes, I'd sure appreciate it. I just wish I would've paid closer attention to it.

I have the engine rebuild manual but is there any other manual out there for the drivetrain? I would think there would have to be a manual that would explain the assembly of the drive clutch. There's really not much to it. I just need to know how far to twist the black cover which in turn will "clock" the spring.

Thanks for helping me through this!
