Driven Clutch Help Needed
My '85 gasser has a vibration that increases with speed. The culprit appears to be the driven clutch. I removed the dust cover and blew out years of accumulated belt dust. This seemed to help some. During inspection of the clutch, I noticed that there was considerable lateral movement (slack) when "rocking" the sheave half closest to the motor. I am thinking that this could be a worn bushing and the cause of the vibration. Any thoughts? Also, my clutch has "buttons" versus the "ramps" that I have seen referenced elsewhere. Are these a serviceable part? Finally, when removing the driven clutch, does the rear end need to be dropped out or does the engine need to be pulled? Any other tricks/tips would be appreciated.

Re: Driven Clutch Help Needed
Welcome Borehog Yes the buttons are replaceable and I'm sure if you contact one of the site sponsors you'll find them. As for removal all you need to do is remove the belt and the bolt located in the center of the clutch it's on a splined shaft and may just slide off. If not you may have to persuade it with a piece or block of wood about 10" long from the rear side tapping it from side to side. A bit of PB Blaster in the hole will help loosen it up before removal. Good Luck!! Oh if you decide to take it apart your going to have to make a tool to compress the spring and there is pressure on it so be careful

Re: Driven Clutch Help Needed
Thanks for the reply. Will there be sufficient room to remove the clutch off of the shaft without removing the engine or dropping the rear end? Any thoughts regarding the "slack" and if there should be any or not?

Re: Driven Clutch Help Needed
I believe theres enough room but if you run into clearance problems just remove the passenger side rear motor mount bolt disconnect the air cleaner rubber hose from the carb and jack the cradle up a bit for clearance. Yes there is a bushing and it probably is worn but I haven't replaced one so maybe someone else can help. In the past I've taken mine apart cleaned every thing well and reassembled it If you take it apart you may want to shim it if it has the flat spring which will in effect keep it in low a bit longer making it easer to go up hills before it starts to open up.

Here's how I shimmed mine. [/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]
It comes apart with a 3 jaw puller, Tight I must say! The shim is 7/16 thick. Worked wonders on my low end !! |
