Default Comet clutch tuning

I have a new comet clutch on my 83 ez go. "ribbed cover type" It has 6 pucks with steel weights and 3 that are just plastic. The question is can you drill the hole out bigger in the steel weight with out damaging the puck? I know to go easy, not heat it up with drilling it, don't gouge the out side in the vice while holding it. will the steel insert spin?

Thanks for any knowledge!!

I get buying new pucks.... But has anyone ever drilled them out with any success? You know.. custom weights... and making them actually match each other in weight "not like they come" all over the map ...

Just keep in mind that whatever you do to one puck you must also do to the other two in the "triangle" to keep the puck weights the same. The pucks for the ribbed cover are different from the smooth cover if you are looking to buy some........ and it's a little strange that you have six with metal inserts and three solid plastic pucks. What color spring is in there now? Can you weigh the pucks you have now? I would start by removing the solid plastic pucks and seeing what that does for you before drilling out the metal ones.. Remember, more weight = lower engagement and stronger initial belt pressure, stronger the spring = higher RPM's, especially with lighter weights. It's all a balancing act....

The clutch has a black spring and I think the 6 pucks are 7/8 dia steel inserts. I don't know the part number.. I'll have it back apart soon, and weigh them all on my gram scale, the spring is pretty stiff..... I understand the tuning aspect of it all I've done a few sleds and more than a few Zuma scooters. I'm just not wanting to buy a bunch of pucks just to leave them in the tool box drawer when its all sed and done,

So,,,, has any one ever drilled them out with out messing them up?

Why not start with removing/ drilling the solid ones? I know, still not answering your question..... no, I haven't. They are "inserts", so my guess is that they will spin out easily.

I did some digging and the original 94C that came with EZGo's thru '88 had (3) P/N 214973 pucks (7/8" insert, 53.5 gms) and a 205858A spring (pink).

Here's the final out come, The pucks can be drilled with out a problem
My clutch is a comet "clone" so the black spring is almost identical to the comet pink " which I bought" it now has 3 plastic pucks, 3 52G pucks and 3 40G pucks. It runs good! Has a decent stall, and stays up in rev's decent all the way through the cvt shift so I call it done! .. [IMG][/IMG]

Mt driven clutch is shimmed up quite a bit too!

Also just for future knowledge,, I ran it with the pink spring, the plastic weights which equal nothing. and 3 52G weights .. the thing would scream, and only shift like 1/4 of the CVT and go about 8 mph This is diffident than the stock 94c because of my 7/16 shim in the driven clutch i'm sure. Thanks for all the help and concern! I hope someone takes something from all this!! I did... every project is diffident and no two clutch tuning's are the same
