Workhorse Carb problem
I have a '02 workhorse st sport. I've been having alot of problems with the carb. Most times it will start without problem but will soon die like it ran out of fuel, other times it doesn't want to start at all. I'm getting good flow from the pump. I've taken it apart and cleaned it out with carb cleaner and reinstalled. Now it seems to run better without the screw on top that covers, what I assume is, the pilot jet. Any ideas what the problem could be. Also, I can't seem to find a rebuild kit for it, is the only option to replace the whole unit? Thanks

Re: Workhorse Carb problem
Take the carb apart, and run Torch-Tip cleaners thru all the passages, and jets.Remove the Main-Jet,Most have a tube on the end inside the body with a bunch of small holes in it.These clog easily. After you clean everything, flush it with carb-cleaner and compressed-air if you have a compressor. Then reassemble, make sure the float is set correctly(level with the gasket-surface,not tilted, when the carb is held upside-down).A kit is only necessary if you have damaged, worn,or missing parts,it won't fix a clogged-unit.I've done at least 20 carbs this year, and bought 1 kit.The gas we now have has a 2-3month shelf-life,then it turns into a gummy varnish that clogs everything.Hope this helps.

Yeah, Thanks for the info. The torch tip cleaner is a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try and see how she runs. Thanks again.

Re: Workhorse Carb problem
Careful with torch cleaners.. they can add jet size if you grind them in and out too much..

Re: Workhorse Carb problem
Always use one that fits loose in the passage, you don't want any drag as it passes thru.

Re: Workhorse Carb problem
Some carbs have such small holes I have to pluck a wire from a wire brush with needle nose to clean them.

Re: Workhorse Carb problem
Thanks for all the input guys. I cleaned it up last night and put it back on this morning, seems to be running better. I just need to adjust the cables and governer to get a little more speed out of it. I would like to add disc brakes and some sort of locking diff. in the near future. Thanks again.

Re: Workhorse Carb problem
On the smaller jets I use a bread twist tie stripped to the metal or a piece of coax cable stripped down. Gives you something to hold on to..
