Default How bad will this look?

I'm having a hard time justifying $300 + for an 80" roof for my '86 Marathon. I'm thinking about just building a square tube frame, I have to make the front and rear roof supports anyway, and covering it with sheet metal and painting it. This is a John Deere themed cart, so the top will be painted green. This would also save me some of the hassle of painting the plastic top as well. A friend of mine builds bodies for dirt track modified's, so I could get the metal fairly reasonable, probably saving around $200.

Has anybody seen something like this? After all of the work I'm going through, I don't want it to look cheesy......

Thanks

Hey man, from my experience ANYTHING can turn out nice depending on how much work you put into it. Maybe give it a little shape and contour by making it have an eyebrow like this ,-----.

Also I've seen alot of the guys on here cut the front posts on their tops to make the front lower than the back, and I think it really makes a big difference in looks

...just my 2 cents

I hadn't thought about putting a little "spoiler" on the front of it like that, it may look pretty good. I had planned on lowering the front a little so it had a rake to it, kind of street rod looking, but not too far. I thought about making it a dirt track look-a-like and building a sprint car wing for the top of it :)

Nope, to be a John Deere you gotta make the top YELLOW.

My top has several cracks, like someone rolled it or something. I am looking at options too. Sounds like you have a great idea. Wonder if it would be noisy if the wind punches it from different directions.

Man, I've seen a few Deere carts with a yellow roof, and it looks good, but to be right it's green, I'm not 100% decided on that though. I figured I'd have to put several cross bars on the top, and reviet the top and sides pretty well. I would think that hitting bumps would be more likely to make it flex and make noise. Mine is lifted and will see some "fun" along with rough ground at tractors shows with the family.

Sounds great to me. I'm more or less doing a poor man's upgrade to mine. My wife doesn't even want me to invest in having it painted. She wants me to purchase a second new/used one. Ours is used to ride around The Villages and for shopping. Once I change it to sport the 22" ATV tires, I won't even be able to use it on the golf course.

Post some photos of yours when you get a chance. I like the John Deere idea. I'd like to do the Harley Davidson idea on mine. Have to wait for funding authorization from the treasury..

well if you have access to the body shop you can roll some beads into it to stiffen them up , you could even make a stereo pod or storage shelf in it , i was thinkin along those same lines but with aluminum or plastic diamond plate and mould it to fit , and a light bar.

Sass I might want to see some pics of yours before I make my front and rear brackets. I talked with my buddy last night, and he has a shrinker/stretcher, so i think I can actually curve it close to what a regular roof looks like, so it may turn out pretty nice...
