Default 79 PG2 Crankshaft

Has anybody tried to replace the Needle Roller bearing from rod to crank on a 79 2PG Crankshaft with success? I have a 79 EZGO 244 Robin with a internal Generator / starter. It looks like the pin can be pressed out and and needle bearing replaced as long as the journal and rod are good....Anyone had any luck over the years? This is similar to some older automotive industrial applications that shops do all the time? I apprecaite the input.

Welcome I'm sure it could be done but the first problem I see is finding the correct bearing. After that it would take a big press to separate the two halves and to press them back together. Now the problem at this point would be to locate are install them in balance and possibly rebalance the assembly once they are together. I'm sure you'll find the bearing will be metric. Some motorcycles like Suzuki has what's known as a pork chop crank and they do this on performance engines all the time then weld the crank pin so it doesn't slip. You may want to check with a motorcycle shop or machine shop for COST but I'm thinking you'll find replacing the crank assembly will be more cost effective. Others may have different options just my thought

Thanks for the insite. Finding a good 79 crankshaft has been my challenge. Because it only fits 76-79 and not in production any more presents it's challenges. My thought was to see if it could be done because it is no good the way it is. My uncle has an engine machine shop where he thinks it may work as long as we can find a new bearing...Nowhere on the net can I find any information of someone trying this so maybe if it works...others may benefit.

Yep bearing specs is going to be the problem. Maybe Bearing Headquarters or Bearings Direct after disassembly. Believe me they seem to think those metric bearings are GOLD

Keep us posted. I have the same concerns. I bought another 1979 Cart just for parts.

I promised everyone I would update this blog when done....so here you go all old EZGO fans. I successfully took an old 244 from 1979 and replaced the connecting rod and crankshaft bearing. The key here is to find a good motorcycle engine machine shop. We were able to measure up the original rod and order a replacement that works great. The shop then pressed apart the crankshaft, replaced the bearing and rod with the new one and pressed it back together. The shop work is critical to the success of the project. The rod and bearings we used were from Hot Rods and the part number was CR 168. It is from a 1983-2005 Polaris Trail Boss 250 ATV. The rod will fit onto the original crankshaft and the original wrist pin and it runs great. I paid 150.00 to the shop for part and labor. Attached is my 79 ezgo that I successfully restored. I found it in a field where it sat for 10 years. I purchased it with the engine apart and in boxes. As my daughter told me sarcastically when I trailered it home..."nice golf cart dad! ". Now she can't get off if it and she's the hit of the campground with the LED's that I installed on it. I have under 800.00 in this so far ... But I still need some new tires. But all in all... It came out great and I'm happy with it. Paint on this is 2012 corvette burnt orange dupont base clear. It's really pretty on the sun!

Good Job Problem solved Thanks for your post and the update others may want to know who performed the machine work and a contact number for them as I don't think any of the site sponsors does this work. Just a thought.
