Default no foward or reverse

Im helping a friend and not to familiar with golf carts but its a ezgo st480. It had a burned up stater generator that I replaced . Motor starts up fine now but when i move the direction selector in foward or reverse it dosent move like its in neutrol . Friend says it did go into gear before starter went bad .Could be operator error but i dont think so . Im not sure what to look at next.

Check down by the transaxle to see if the cable is actually moving the lever on the transaxle. The cable can come loose from its holder so when the shift lever is moved, nothing happens at the transaxle.

I can see it moving the lever back and forth. It did go into forward once. Im not sure why. when I moved to reverse it stayed in forward .I killed engine and restarted it again. It seemed like it popped out of gear and seemed to be back into neutral again and that's all it would do.

you have cables binding up you need to lube the shift cables and check for pinch spots. i know my cart can be finicky sometimes with shifting due to the cables

ok I lubed cables and shifted back and forth to work it in . In doing i discovered that with the motor off i can now shift into forward and reverse but with the motor running I cant shift into eather. If i shift into foward before starting engine it go's into foward but it wont go into nuetrol or reverse. I can turn engine off move it to reverse restart engine and it will be in reverse but I cant move it out of gear . The direction handel moves the cables just fine but the rocker arm on transmission seems to bind when motor is running.

First off you should never shift a cart while running if you have pedal start cart the gears will grind if it does shift like that due to worn bearings in the rear. always let the engine stop then shift as the rotation of the secondary clutch will not let it shift.
