Does it run? How are the tires? Do you have any idea on what you'd like to do? What are you looking to end up with? Do you have pictures you could post?

Re: 80 marathon project ideas
After many years of rebuilding old cars - the one thing I would suggest before anything is that you both spend the time to make sure the carts start, run, and stop reliably before doing anything else.
On more than one occasion I've taken a 'runner' (VW, not cart) and poured time/money into it, only to neglect the aforementioned items. Only to have the fun sidelined because of poor brakes or engine reliability. On my cart, I purchased what I thought was a pretty well sorted running cart. Only after climbing under it did I learn the accelerator pedal was zip tied to throttle linkage and the headlight wires were simply twisted together. Spend a few weekends going over the cart to make sure the previous owners didn't 'quick fix' something which should have been fixed the right way. Granted, I'm new to these carts, so that's just my dos pesos, Ted |

Re: 80 marathon project ideas
Mine runs decent. but does need some work. starts and goes no problem trying to go up grade is difficult. As well the brakes need to be looked at it stops just takes a little ummf against the pedal. I am using this as a project for the summer. I want it to move good and look good. Some of the carts i've seen like real prime time. But as i am completely new to this i don't know were to start.
I knowticed a line coming out the top of the carb but doesn't lead to anything. In the one picture it is the line i am holding. Thanks for the replies gents |

Re: 80 marathon project ideas
Don't feel bad, I'm pretty new to this as well (PS - I'm not a gent lol)... I started with a tune up kit, checking brushes on my starter generator, new tires (mine were dry rotted)... Next is new air filter, and a new mount for the starter generator (somehow I cracked and broke mine...)

Re: 80 marathon project ideas
The line from the carburetor is actually the breather and it does not go anywhere. It is designed to let air into the bowl as the fuel level drops. If you ever see fuel coming out of it that is a good indication that the float has sunk or the needle valve is jammed open.
BTW in the same image, where the throttle cable goes through the carburetor arm there should be a spring between the arm and the cable stop. This ensures that the throttle is held tightly closed and prevents backfires especially on overrun. Dave |

Re: 80 marathon project ideas
there is a spring but it looks like it's been stretched. It does backfire periodicly when you let of the gas and start to brake. You think that spring maybe the cause for that? Can you buy a new spring?
