Default txt with no spark after hei

Hello all, let me start off by saying you guys have a great forum going on here! I'm not a golf cart owner but its only a matter of time now. so here's my problem the local church camp has asked me if i could fix there flooded txt. this poor thing has been flooded 3 times but free is now there price range. there was no water in the crank case, or carb but it was deep enough to get into the air filter. the accel micro switch was shot so i replaced that. the brushes in the starter/gen where rusted solid so i pulled them and wire wheeled everything. now it turns over no problem, but no spark. so i wired up an ebay hei as per instructions, still no spark. i checked coil resistance, it fell within range then i checked the pulse coil, its got 20.5 ohms but the book says it need 450 so i changed that. $91.45 later still no spark so i checked the ohms again, its 21? am i missing something i've got ac voltage to the hei but nothing at the coil side. this thing is turning into a part time job

Welcome to forum. Being cart was flooded 3 times i would go to troubleshooting your grounds and all wire connections. take loose wires on grounds and clean.

the hei metal plate needs to be grounded good. If i were to keep the cart a long time, i would look at doing a re-wire.

thanks for the reply i've already stripped all the grounds and wire wheeled them and have good contacts. i'm starting to think the 20 ohm pulsar isn't providing enough "pulse" for the hei. how much ac voltage is anyone getting while cranking? and why does the book say 430-580 ohms but a brand new coil test 20? i also have an oil pressure switch that has no wire going to it, but every wire on the harness is accounted for?

I have a new pulsar in my shop, it measures around 25 ohms. The ac output of your pulsar should be a minimum of .3V ac, more is prefered. Do you have 12V on the + of your coil and 12V on the ignitor wire?

For some reason the pulsar resistance is different depending on the engine type. The old 2 strokes used a pulsar that measured ~150 ohms but the 4 strokes did measure ~ 20 ohms. You say that you are working on a TXT cart so I assume it is a two cylinder 4 stroke. As far as I can tell the HEI mod only works on the single cylinder 2 stroke. In another thread discussing this I shouted out to anyone who had successfully performed this mod on a 4 stroke and was answered only by the call of the crickets and some tumbleweed blowing across the screen. My theory is that the HEI unit only provides enough output for one coil but the two cylinder is using a twin coil with both coils firing at the same time.
There is another (long shot) solution however. I once spent 3 days trying to find why an EZGO would not spark. Eventually I discovered that the clutch was loose on the crankshaft and although the starter motor and clutch were spinning the engine was not. A quick check of the compression would have put me on the right track.

Good luck

Dave

thanks for the reply! the engine turns over but i could see that being hard to make spark without it turning lol. so i guess i'm just going to have to bite the bullet and buy the oem ignitor. and its a 295 pre mci robin?

Seems people have gotten it to work but its hit and miss. Personally I think the OEM coil is the problem. If you have a coil laying around try swapping and see if you get spark.

Make sure the module is grounded.

Before I would buy a expensive ignitor, I would functional test your coil, spark plug wires and spark plugs. This can be done all at the same time by this method.
1) Turn off ignition key
2) remove both spark plugs, ground cases, I usally connect a clamp from a batt. jumper cable and ground the other end. Be sure plugs are good and set to .030 gap.
3) Remove both small wires from ignition coil. Take a small jumper wire and clip onto the + of the coil and connect the other end to a hot +12V. Take aother jumper wire and connect to the ignition coil - . Now tap the wire you connected to the – terminal on a good ground, each time you tap and let go, this fires the coil. You should see both plugs fire a blue spark. If not ,you have a bad coil or spark plug wires. Im assuming you have new plugs installed.
4) If this works, then your hei isn’t working or wired proper, or your voltage is so low on cranking its not enough to fire the coil, you need at least 11.5-12v on + of ign. coil when cranking.
