Clutch info needed Educate me
Ok I have a golf car made by Western Golf. It uses a EZ-GO frame and a robins 295 motor. I use it at the drag strip to tow my car. It slips the clutch and the cart comes to a stand still when going up a slight incline. I do my own mechanic work. I noticed there are 2 clutches? 1 is on the motor and 1 is on the rear end. I see there are performance clutches. The entire cart is stock (8-inch tires and rims) as I bought it used. The rear clutch I understand and can be bought as a 28 degree clutch from what I have read. What about the front clutch, what does this do and how can I improve the performance of the front clutch? I could also use some more top end too and thoughts on this matter. I will try and adjust the Governor and get additional top end.
Thanks Chuck PineApple Express Racing. |

Re: Clutch info needed Educate me
Chuck, before going after performance parts I would get it working with the stock parts, then you have a base to compare any changes too. The clutchs are realy a variable transmision, the drive tries to close on the belt and shift into a larger diameter (higher gear), the driven has a helix, (3 ramps) the angle on these ramps is the variable that is refered to in 28 degree. The ramps sense the load the cart is placing on the engine and try and hold the driven in a larger diameter (lower gear) the two clutchs work together to give a smooth shift curve from engagement to wide open full speed. Check all the parts and components for obvious slop and wear or binding, Use a seamstress tape to measure the belt for strech and width. Measure the tape with a steel tape to besure it has not been used to bundle newspapers. Sorry for the long post but I think clutching is one of the most misunderstood areas in a carts performance Good luck.

Re: Clutch info needed Educate me
Ok the first thing is to get what the stock belt should be. I found the hard way the cart shop I got the cart from had a wrong alt belt on it. I need to get the correct belt for this cart. Besides contacting the original manufacturer where can I get the correct belt number. I think getting the correct belt should set the base line as you are saying. I checked all the serial and model info. What is the year of this motor as this would tell me the year of my cart, unless its located on the EZ-GO frame as this is a Western Car 100 series which uses a EZ-GO frame.
Engine Info: Robin Engines EH29C Production Number: EH29CPG10002038 Serial Number 1028545 I changed the drive belt as the old one was wrong and would not run the alternator. I got this one from Checkers Auto Parts. Drive Belt: 1342 "Made in USA" 3000-309 Alternator Belt is a 15345-11AV0875 Thanks Chuck |

Re: Clutch info needed Educate me
Chuck, I am new to the carts and my background is snowmobile racing so I can't help with the year of your cart. The belt you quoated should be 1 3/16 X 41 inchs long. Perhaps someone with an EZGO will know what you need. I searched western carts and couldn't find any thing on older carts but they build some real nice new stuff. Good luck.

Re: Clutch info needed Educate me
Does it have leaf or coil springs and can you post some pics of it?

The fronts have 2 leaf springs and the rear has coils. I can get pictures if you still want them.

Re: Clutch info needed Educate me
Coil springs in the back are used on the marathon based carts. The belt for these are Ezgo 1992-1993 2cyc and 1992-1994 4cyc, it is 40 3/4" long, OEM # 27077-G02. Your cart could be newer cause they used that same setup in carts up to 97 I believe. If you read the sticky thread about shorter belts, your cart should be one that would need the shorter yamaha belt if your wanting to go that way. It's my guess that the incorrect longer belt you're now using is a big part of the problems you have at this time.

Re: Clutch info needed Educate me
I've never done it but many others have, if you read the sticky thread about shorter belts I think some of the guys talk about the yamaha belt.
