Sorry for repeat but 84 gas will not run
Hi guys-this one is gonna kill me but I'm having fun.
Things went downhill a week ago. I had a hunch the coil was the issue so replaced it with oem style. Cart would run and start very well. It would run 100 yards and die. Suspected fuel but moved to the coil. Replaced the coil and same thing. While trying to determine what was going on I lost spark. This is without messing with anything but fuel. Replaced ignitor with HEI conversion. Got spark and good spark. Now cart will sputter and backfire. Every few tries it appears engine will try to start. Removed muffler and the same. Pulsar coil 149 ohms, 0.3V AC off one wire none on other. Coil meets requirements in other posts. Have worked on all the grounds and voltages are correct all over including during cranking. To me it appears the timing is way off. I've switched the pulsar leads and I get absolutely no engine kicks or backfires. I know this is a repeat of other posts but most don't come back with a solution or end abruptly. |

Ok so at this moment you have reliable spark? If you're thinking timing though you're going to need to get a good repair manual which should be available all over the place, or trailer it to a cart repair place. If it's just setting up your timing it should be too crazy of a bill.

Yes, reliable spark. Its acting like timing. This afternoon I did get it to run but can not repeat it. I'm wondering if the pulsar coil can act like this and may have been my problem all along.
When I did get it to run I had reversed the red/blue to the HEI and was getting some horrificly loud backfires. I then took the plug out and tried the spark. It was not consistent. I reversed the red/blue connections to the HEI and the spark was very consistent. I screwed the plug back in and got a few misfires but it started. I ran it for at least 2 minutes and let it shut off. Have not been able to start it since. Still consistent spark. In a few other posts HEI conversion only worked after the pulsar coil was replaced. Thanks for your input. I'm sure the timing hasn't changed physically but wondering if electrically due to a bad or intermittent pulsar it may be giving me what I have now. |

Update. I used a timing light and found that spark is sporadically kicking out while trying to run it. The spark plug off the engine has consistent spark. This is with a new spark plug just installed and one hotter.

I don't know if I understand or not so bare with me. You're saying that when you use a timing light, your spark is sporadic, but testing the plug in the traditional manner of laying it against bare metal produces a constant spark. Do I have it right?

That is correct. I wish I had tried the timing light earlier in this. Now it is acting like it has a electrical rev limiter where it starts to increase in rpm from start and then quits sparking. Misses some sparks and then starts to spark and backfires. Whole process then repeats. I have a coil coming tomorrow from another thread the 77 Nova 4.1l coil. If this doesn't work its either a bad HEI from the box or its the pulsar coil.
I didn't think hei had a rev limit and this would very slow (just off idle so to say). |

Re: Sorry for repeat but 84 gas will not run
The HEI most likely doesn't have a rev limiter. You've got something else going on. You can take that HEI unit into the auto parts shop and have it tested though. I'd take it in at a couple different times so different people are testing it and see if the results concur. Many of the employees running the testing equipment are barely able to use the cash registers at the 7-11 they were hired from. I don't know why they tend to hire people to sell auto parts that tend to know absolutely nothing about them, but when getting something tested I'll usually take it in a few different times myself or go to different stores.

Heliarc, the Nova HEI coil did the trick. It runs but has some misfires going on still. Now to go after adjusting the carb. I have a new spark plug coming also. Thanks for your help. I will post on Friday.
