Default Is this crankshaft good or bad?

91' marathon 3pg,

I'm not sure if I need to replace this crank or not? My engine started knocking when it got hot but now it does it all the time. I checked the connecting rod at the crank and it has some pretty good play side to side but straight up and down I can't feel any movement. Before I tore the engine apart I checked to see if I could move the crank up and down but it felt tight? Don't want to replace good parts if I don't have to.

I can't say definitively but I can tell you that I would not put that back in my engine. It looks like one of the clutch side bearings has seized up. The bearing are a tight interference fit so even if you ticked the crank with some emery cloth the diameter would be affected and I don't think it would be too long before it was knocking again.

My $0.02

Thanks Dave,

I might as well bite the bullit and get a new crank and bearings to fix the problem for sure.

You should have almost no side to side play. Just did a long block rebuild of my 91 3PG engine and had same sloppy rod movement and of course piston and jug scoring big time. My guess was that the oil injection rod that was brock on the unit when I purchased the none running ezgo was the culprit and thus no oil takes out other things like bearings. Your crank looks like some dried out bearings have been turning also. i would most deff. do a long block rebuild.

Thanks, it's hard to throw money at this stock motor when I really want to big block it in the long run, but I can't stand having it sit in the shop undrivable. Just did the top end a couple years ago so I might as well do the bottom end and have a good running motor. Do you guys know how much these stock motors go for if I wanted to sell it when I go for the big block?
