EZGO transaxel FNR shifter not working
Hello all! I am new to this forum and am very excited to get involved in the buggies gone wild community.
First question involves the EZGO transaxle FNR shift lever. I have the axel off of the golf cart so that i can get it functioning just right before i install it. What i need help with is how to assemble the FNR shifter with the springs and brackets and everything in the correct place. It is very hard to find a good picture of the shift lever so i have no idea how it goes together. Also, before i get to the assembly of the lever there might be another problem with the FNR shifter. When i rotate the input shaft counterclockwise the hubs also turn counterclockwise (same with clockwise rotation), but when i shift the FNR lever the other way and rotate the input shaft counterclockwise again, the hubs still turn the same direction (again, same with clockwise rotation). It seems to me that the shifter is not doing its job inside the transaxel. So my question is, is there a trick to the FNR lever to get it to switch the rotation of the hubs into reverse? If the lever has no trick to shifting the drive does that most likely mean i have to take the transaxel apart and inspect the lever inside the housing and look for problems? If it helps at all with troubleshooting the engine i am using is a 2 cycle 399 rotax with the belt driven torque converter. |

Here's pics of the connections at the axle and shifter.
The rotation should change directions when you shift from fwd to rev. It could just be hung up from lack of use. |

Re: EZGO transaxel FNR shifter not working
Thank you for the quick response! It looks to me like i might not have all the parts. I can attach a picture of my axle after this weekend. Im not exactly sure if mine is the axle that i think it is. The lever on top is what i thought was the FNR shifter. Does the lower bracket with the two cables rock left and right in order to rotate the upper lever?
Sorry if these are rediculous questions i am new to this world and i plan to adapt and learn as i go! thanks |

Re: EZGO transaxel FNR shifter not working
rib33024: I wish i knew! The cart that i got is an ezgo marathon late 80's or early 90's i believe but i was going to put this different axle on it because it was given to me and it has the spline coming out of the side instead of the front. I have looked and can't find a model number or anything on this new axle. I will get pictures and see if y'all can help me identify this axle
1989Marathon: You may be right because i don't remember seeing any place for the lower two wires. In that case, the 399 rotax engine that i am using cannot run in reverse so i won't have reverse unless i get a 4 stroke axle? The governor that you mentioned, is it a governor like that is on most engines that doesn't allow it to go over a certain speed? |

Re: EZGO transaxel FNR shifter not working
Yes, the governor is controlled by the rearend. Once you reach a certain ground speed, the governor pulls the throttle back.
Unless the motor can run in reverse, you'll need a 4-stroke rearend to get reverse. |

Re: EZGO transaxel FNR shifter not working
ok perfect thank you so much! The picture you sent of your four stroke axle, is that still the same set up for the two stroke axle governor?

The governor shaft comes out of the rear at about the same location.

Re: EZGO transaxel FNR shifter not working
ok thank you thank you! I think for now i am just going to use the axle with no reverse and get everything running smooth first. Later on i will try to find a four stroke axle so i can get reverse. Ill let y'all know how it goes! I'm gonna hop to it this weekend.
