Default 87 ezgo/ hei done now it overheats

I have an 87 ezgo 2 stroke... I wasn't getting spark so I did the hei fix... It worked but now if I drive for more than 4 minutes my cart starts to get sluggish and overheat. I lift the seat when this happens and my exhaust pipe is just smoking..

I was told to try a cooler plug but wasn't sure what to get.. Any suggestions?

Did you use the early 70's module ?? the later styles have a built in advance which may be advancing and retarding the timing. Have you thought about maybe a plugged muffler ?

We used one for a 1977 Nova per the HEI conversion thread. As for the muffler, we've bbq'd it plus ran the cart without the muffler attached and still have the overheat issue.

What is the make and part number of the coil and ignition module you used?
The correct parts are important to make the HEI conversion work properly. Does it run good until it gets hot?

We purchased from Auto Zone. The module and coil are both Duralast. Part no for coil - C835 (DC-59HS) and module - DR100 (DR-300). I believe the 1st part no's are for the store and the second ones are for the manufacturer.

Those are the right parts. Does it run well before it gets hot, or does it sputter a little bit.

It seems to run fine at the beginning. However after only a few minutes it heats up and it starts to bog down then ultimately shuts itself off. Once you let it cool down, it will run again but that just starts the process over.

Definitely can't go far...

The plug itself looks good however it is black.
