Default Pulsar help

I'm finally getting around to replacing the pulsar on my 91 ezgo. I checked some threads and didn't find anything but I was wondering if there is a way to replace that thing without pulling the motor. I have replace every part on the ignition except the pulsar, and did the HEI conversion in the process, but still have no spark. This thing is killin me. Any help would be great. Thanks

The short answer is no. However before you dive in might I suggest that you test the pulsar in situ.

Take apart the connector that joins the pulsar wires to the ignitor (or in your HEI module) Have a look in there for corrosion or indeed a broken wire.

Set an ohmmeter or multimeter to 200 ohms and measure the resistance of the pulsar. You are looking for 75 - 150 ohms. If you see that then remove one probe and connect it to the engine block you are looking for infinity ohms now replace the probe and use the other probe on the block. In this way you have tested both wires to make sure that they have not shorted to ground (and that was my problem) If you are looking good then set your meter to the lowest ac range it has and with the probes back across the pulsar crank the engine. You are looking for 300 - 500 mVolts ac. If this checks out than your pulsar is good and we can move on.

BTW I know that these ignitions are a bit of a pain to test but have you replaced the HT lead? These do corrode in the coil and go high resistance.

I'm assuming this is a 2 stroke..... If the above checks out.

1. Make sure you have grounded the HEI module.
2. Try switching the pulsar wires around.
3. Try a different coil....like a regular round type coil. I used a Ford HEI coil one time....worked great. ( I just yanked it off an old ford truck I had sitting here.) I've found through several conversions its hit and miss with those factory coils....mostly misses.
4. Try a new coil wire....especially if you used an HEI coil or round type, use an appropriate plug wire.

I have tried it all. I have tested everything and it all testes fine.i have rewired everything that looked bad and have removed, cleaned and replace every ground I can find. I have replaced every part of the ignition system except the pulsar coil. I am at a loss at this point and don't know what else to do besides replace the coil. New battery, new coil new HEI set up new wiring new ground. I'm about to take it out back and put it out of my missory. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I rebuilt my 91 3PG totaly and as I look at my engine just now as the cart is about 4' from in my shop. I think based on what I did to remove the balancer and such that you could do the install without the removal of the engine. Need a good puller for the balancer and the right bolts but i think enough room to do it with engine in.
I know from the sounds of it that you have did and checked everything. However, in my travels of a hundred miles or more have found that some times we overlook a simple item. If you have a manual, check wiring details to the T and that voltage is routing as it should be. Not trying to be redundant but no spark at all is funny if power is reaching needed items.
Test again, every switch and regulator for continuity and that voltage with key on is getting where it is suposed to be. You should be able to follow to the last stop of power. Wish it was here so i could play with it...In shop right now with fine cigar and bored.
Pulser is not a big deal to install and set up as you simply place the unit at the set marks. Take pics as you go along for referance when re-install.
Let us know when you find the culprit.

So you did everything in my previous post and the pulsar checks out. What was the ohm reading and what was the ac volts reading?

If you remove the sparkplug, lie it on the engine so that the case of the plug is grounded and crank the engine do you see any sort of spark? (I guess the answer is no).

With a voltmeter on the positive side of the coil and the engine cranking do you see 12 (ish) volts.

If you do then remove both the wires to the coil connect the positive of the coil to the positive of the battery and the negative of the coil to a flying lead. Swipe the negative lead across the battery negative terminal. Do you see a spark or two?

There absolutely is a ground strap from the common ground point to the engine block, yes?

Yes that ground is there. I am really at a loss. Dave, you and I did all the testing and trouble shooting, via this forum, about 8 months ago with no luck. I know I have done everything except replace the pulsar because I did everything you told me to do and I believe you know your stuff. Thanks for all your help and I'll keep trying.

Dave, if you're still around the forum -- I have tested the pulsar on my 1987 ezgo and got 156 ohms for the ohms test and the voltage test varied between 250 and 320 mv. My cart runs great when it gets going. Sometimes when I stop and let it set for a minute it will not start. Could this be because of a weak spark? Could the pulsar cause a weak spark? I don't think it is vapor lock or flooding. I'm running an electric fuel pump and bypassing the stock fuel pump.
