Starter/Generator Removal
I'm trying to get this starter off of the cart and I have everything off except for the rod that runs along the bottom of the starter, the main connecting rod. I have the nut off of the end of the bolt but the head of the bolt will not turn, and im afraid I might snap the bolt if I keep twerkin on it. Manual says:
"Some starter/generator pivot bolts have a stop attached to it that prevents its rotation; requiring no use of a back up wrench. 8. Use a large screwdriver hooked under the head of the pivot bolt to slide the pivot bolt out of the starter/ generator." I cant get a screwdriver in there. Any pointers? |

Re: Starter/Generator Removal
Try putting the nut back on a little bit and smack it with a hammer. Maybe it will pop it loose for you.

Re: Starter/Generator Removal
Yeah i tried that too. Not much room to swing a hammer or a dead cat in there. I will beat on it some more tonight. But does anyone know if my 1990 actually does have a keeper to prevent the mounting bolt from spinning?

Re: Starter/Generator Removal
From what you are saying the nut is off, the bolt itself will not slide out of its sleeve. Probably rusted or seized. Take a good propane torch and heat the sleeve to help free up the bolt and when cools enough for no fire, spray some liquid wrench or simular into both ends You should be able to see any stop that is welded next to bolt head keeping it from spinning or it may be splined and that can need lubing and heat to free up.
Let us know. |

Yeah I haven't been able to slide the bolt out yet. I will try to heat it up next. But what I don't understand is that the bolt will not spin either, and I'm wondering if theres a keeper that prevents it from spinning in the sleeve.

Re: Starter/Generator Removal
Only type of keeper would be a splined bolt head but that would be more expensive to make for a company so I would think but not sure that it just may be frooze in. I have had leaf spring bolts of large size snap the nut off just because the bolt was mastitized to the inside sleeve. Heat those things and you would be shocked at how much easyer it is to get them loose.
Try the heat and do a back and forth tighten/loosen with a socket wrench and see if it free's up |

Re: Starter/Generator Removal
I just looked and on my 90 there isn't even a head on the bolt. It's just round... Not rounded off but actually round. I'm not sure what to make of it.

Re: Starter/Generator Removal
If you have a rounded head, my guess would be it is splined at the head and should be driven out from nut end after a good heating. Remember to have the nut on with out the threads showing before trying to dive it.
Another thought...have you removed or loosened the tensioner? If you have pressure on the bolt it could make it to tight to want to move. With tensioner loosened does the unit rotate on the bolt? Should have free play, if not it is seized would be my guess and again heat. |

Re: Starter/Generator Removal
Ha mine must be seized up good. I ran it for two weeks with the tensioner disconnected and no nut on the bolt going through starter and it never budged even a hair. I'd like to put brushes in my starter but haven't had the time to mess with it again.
