89 Gas Ez Go pumping gas out of exhaust
Our 89 Marathon started running really rough and the speed was terrible. When we checked under the seat after running, everything was so hot. We noticed after looking around that it seems the gas/oil combo is coming out of the joint between the exhaust and muffler. The cart still starts but I'm assuming this is not a good thing and could very likely be the cause of the overheating and slow speed.
We took the carb off and cleaned, changing the fuel lines along with the filters thinking that would help, however it's still coming out. Any thoughts as to what it might be? We've only had this dang thing for going on 2 weeks and it's been a constant headache to the point my husband is ready to trash it. |

Your needle/float combo in the carb is stuck open, and the gas is flowing freely into the engine, regardless of whether the cart is running or not.

Re: 89 Gas Ez Go pumping gas out of exhaust
I tend to disagree. If the valve is stuck open then the bowl will fill and fuel will leak from the breather. You state that you cleaned the carburetor (and by that I assume that you took it apart and cleaned it rather than shot some cleaner spray into the air intake) and unburnt fuel is leaking from the exhaust. I would look to the fuel pump as the main suspect. If the diaphragm is cracked fuel will leak into the crankcase via the pressure line and flood the crankcase. This will cause a very rich mixture which will affect the performance and cause unburnt gasoil to leak from the exhaust (albeit more usual to leak from the cylinder manifold union). The test is easy and you will need a few feet of fuel line.
Disconnect the fuel line into the pump and cap it. Take the line off the carburetor and connect it to the input of the fuel pump. You have now made the pump air tight. Now connect you fuel line to the carburetor and the other end to a small funnel or something similar. With someone holding the funnel go for a drive. If it runs better then you need a new pump, if it doesn't you need to look elsewhere. Let us know what transpires. Dave |

Re: 89 Gas Ez Go pumping gas out of exhaust
So we ended up taking the whole engine apart and found that the piston and piston rings were shot (badly scored, rings broken, etc.). The entire bottom block had a bunch of gas in it as well. Needless to say we ordered a top engine rebuild kit and will be taking care of that once we get it.
From those that we've spoken too about our findings, they feel that it was likely the main cause of our issues and that once taken care of we will no longer experience this problem. Does that sound about right? |

Those are defenitly problems that should be addressed, but I think Dave's concern about the fuel pump is still valid. The broken rings would make the engine less effective at pumping air, but I don't think it explains the excessive amount of gas. Did you check the fuel pump also? Maybe a ring shard damaged the diaphragm.

Re: 89 Gas Ez Go pumping gas out of exhaust
Remove the pump and do a complete dis-assembly and check for damage as i believe you are repairing the parts that will make the engine run way better but not the reason fuel was flooding the block. About only thing that can do that is bad float/needle problem or pump failure or at least the most likely.
Would not dispell poss crank and rod replacement at the same time if it has been flooding gas. Check to see if you have any rattling/play when you move the rod back a forth side to side. You should not have hardly any play. If so do complete rebuild with long block and you will get new crank, bearings, seals, piston, rings and gaskets. More money but you will have a new engine. |

while you have it apart, check or BBQ muffler, plugged up muffler will cause gas to accumalte in the crankcase.

Re: 89 Gas Ez Go pumping gas out of exhaust
We had already checked the fuel pump for cracks, broken rings, etc. and everything seemed in functioning order. The top engine rebuild was complete today and the cart is running again without gas pouring out. :) We also bbq'd the muffler per suggestions.
The only thing we are still noticing is that the cart seems to be pretty hot after brief runs. Someone local suggested that perhaps since the muffler was so old that the insulation was weak and thus heating the under carriage. Has anyone experienced overheating or similar? Is there any functions that help to cool the engine? |

I have seen guys wrap the muffler with header tape before but have not tried it myself. Mine gets pretty hot at times but not to bad.
