Seeming low and being low is a diff matter. You may think it was the problem. I purchased a non running 91. the owner said it was running down the road and stalled and never started again. I found that I had only 30 pounds compression and they will not run with that. I rebuilt with long block and runs great now. Check your compression and you need be over 90 to run hardly at all but should be 125.
Also, if you have good compression, loosen the muffler manifold bolts and try to start engine to see if you have a plugged muffler.
I take it you checked the fuel pump by pulling line to carb and turning engine over? If it is not pulsing fuel, check line for crackes and crank seals.
Best I can think of from here with what you have stated.

thanks i will check the compression, is that something that can go bad with no indication that there was a problem. also just for the heck, i removed the sparkplug and shot a small spray of gas in then tried again to start with nothing happening not even a short firing. fuel pump is working and fuel is getting to the carb.

Yes you should have had a hit with spray but no compression will take care of that. remove spark plug from the wire and hang the wire where it will not hit ground. Put your thumb over the plug hole and hit the peddle to see if you are getting a good hit of compression. Just a test as i could have held my finger almost on tight. you should use a tester however for good reading.

No loud knocks should be heard and that is a sign of bad rod or piston pin. My guess is you will find low compression if those parts are warn that much. I think you may be looking at a long block rebuild kit but check it out first.

I am in the middle of an 88 2pg rebuild. I had less than 10 psi compression from a blown head gasket. But I also have bad crank bearings so I am tearing it down still. I didn't have any loud knocks but my rings were intact and the rod feels tight on the crank.

Ninjaneer, move the rod back and forth sideways. If you have any rattle or plenty of sideways movement, you should think about the crank replacement
assembly. You should only have a small bit but not a loose feeling movement.

well checked compression on engine it was less than 30lbs. took engine out and removed the head and found huge groves in head and piston shot. the camshaft seems to be moving fine, i do have a little side to side movement but it doesnt seem like alot (and that is at the top of the stroke) at the bottom of the stroke it seems snug. i'm not sure if i need to do a full rebuild or just the head and piston. any advise would be great.

thanks

If you do not hear a rattling when you move it back an forth you should be ok but then you should at least change out the shaft seals on both ends. Do not need to split the block for that.
